A quick-ish report this time.

You may remember my previous report for another FR flight to Belfast in February, where we just made it by minutes.

This time I was determined not to make the same mistake, and despite a 15 minute wait for a Victoria Line train, made it to the airport an hour before hand.

I took the Stansted Express from Liverpool Street - yet another dirty train, with no thought to the image their train conveys of the company:

Image

For a ticket that costs up to 28.00 in Standard Class, I think Stansted Express is crap.
Image

As it happens, I paid 21.50 via Ryanair for a return on Stansted Express, but still...

Stansted Airport at 7.15am was quiet. VERY quiet. I think it's because Ryanair have a great swathe of flights that leave at between 6am and 7am, so I got through security in 55 SECONDS. Yip! Timed it. From joining the 'queue' to collecting my stuff from the X Ray machine took 55 seconds.

The flight was uneventful. And blue and yellow. Note number of empty seats. I paid 1 including taxes for my ticket. I think Ryanair are suffering.
Image

Typically with Ryanair, they slammed down hard on the runway. They use Belfast City, the most convenient airport for Belfast.

I wanted to take a picture of the airport, but for the first time ever, was stopped by the stewardess from taking pictures.

I opted to take the train into town, and, here, like at Belfast International, they have missed a trick. The railway runs parallel to the airport and the local station, Sydenham, has signs 'For Belfast City Airport' - but to get there you have to take a courtesy coach which drops you off at the bottom of a footbridge. If you're disabled, forget it! If you are travelling back by rail, you have to use a free telephone to summon a courtesy bus. All very convoluted and not helping take traffic off the roads, imho.
Image

A 'treat' was a view of the abandoned terminal building - this also explained why I had no recollection of the airport I had arrived at today and in February, even though I have flown to/from Belfast City before! The old terminal was actually minutes from the railway station.

Image
You can just make out that there are letters missing from 'arrivals'.

After a few minutes, my train arrived, and I bought probably the best value ticket you can get in the whole UK - The 'Freedom of Northern Ireland' - unlimited travel on all buses, coaches and trains for 15 a day.

That's really offputting.

That must be a record. Even at another quiet time (about 4pm) I've never managed that. I think you're correct - when I pitch up at 6am it's usually bedlam, with lots of flights closing / about to close.

Why do they do that ? It can't be just to do with being in an LCC rush, as the number of abrupt landings I've had with EZY in 18 months of regular flying with them can be counted on one hand.

Even with the lack of consideration in the public transport setup, it's far more convenient than International. Was it the runway that used to serve Short Bros?

That's pretty good value - I think it cost me that to get two of us into the city on the bus from Belfast International earlier this year.

Thanks for putting this together...

I took it a couple of times, it was no worse than the GEX or HEX.

The HEX is the rip off IMHO.

Totally agree! However public transport is a rip off in this country! When you buy a ticket on the normal train to LGW and then buy a ticket at LGW it is more expensive than the trip to LGW! WTF is that all about??

There were peole complaining about this on the train on Sunday morning. It is a total con.

They once tried to charge me over 30 to get from LGW to Tunbridge Wells, instead I took a train to Red Hill and bought another ticket there total cost 15.40! [:?]

Get a network card for 20 and it generally knocks a third off the price of rail travel in the south east at most times of the day and all day weekends.

Have saved a small fortune using mine.

Always buy your ticket at the station as they won't sell you discounted ones on trains.

Also, remember to check First Class fares. Sometimes the Standard Class discount quote will sell our before the First Class discounts, and you have a bizarre situation of First Class being cheaper.

This happens a lot, the problem is that when you ask for tickets to london the machines and ticket office tend to 'default' to a any-route which allows you to use the GEX as well, you need to make sure you buy a not-GEX ticket.

Note that if the ticket machine is operated by GEX, it may not give you the full range of walk-up tickets available if you select a 'non-GEX' routing. It may only offer you 'anytime' fares, even when 'off-peak' fares are available.

For example, at Kings Cross, coming from St Pancras Low Level platforms, the first ticket machines you encounter en-route to Kings Cross, are still in the St Pancras side and are operated either by FCC or EMT. Neither of these machines will sell you any of the discounted walk-up fares for NXEC services, they will only sell you 'anytime' fares. Likewise for the FCC machines in Kings Cross itself.

To see the full range of fares for an NXEC journey, you have to go and buy the ticket from an NXEC managed machine, which is utter rubbish.

You *should* be able to buy any walk-up fare for any journey, anywhere in the UK, from one of the touch-screen machines, regardless of the operator responsible for it. There's no limitations in the software or hardware in the machine that I'm aware of.

This is just something that the useless lying theives who run the UK rail services are doing to rip off the unwitting (usually foreign) customer.
