I am going to sound like our parents here, but yesterday a radio show I listen to played the UK top 10, what a complete pile of crap, this is the country that gave us the Beatles, The Who, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd hell the list could go on for hours covering every type of music, but the crap that are hits now, techno and rap...great, but it's bad techno and rap....

Ok mini 'i'm getting old' rant over

And there was me thinking this was about the UK Electorate and their Members of Parliament with their noses in the Trough[}:)][}:)][}:)]

Music[?] I leave such things these days to Mrs Buns - I am stuck in a 70's timewarp[:w]

I am more of a ClassicFM listner myself - not been into chart music since the 80's - I leave that to those who understand & buy the stuff and are in the right age bracket to appreciate it

You miss the key phrase 'Europop' which in the UK's case seems to of morphed into a really awful blend of dodgy US Rap-euro processed pop with a tagged weak ballad.

The country needs a scene revival, and economic gloom usually pushes this. see 2-tone in 80's, etc. few glimmers of hope in the indie scene,

however Britain's got a jiving-on ice-brick layer from swindon-idol, has likely collapsed any future hope for main stream pop in the uk.

I wouldn't know what was in the top 10 (aka hit parade!) My little brother (16yrs and 6ft tall!) loves the rap in the top 10, and often tells me that I'm SO not with it! [xx(]

Just by looking at my iPod, it's also clear that I have no idea what is in any of the charts AT ALL! I do have a few of the music channels on my TV but I have to say that I have never watched them either.

Couldn't agree with you more Scrooge. In fact the whole Top 40 sucks, not a decent rock act amongst them [n].

At least I've got a few decent gigs lined up this year to get my rock fix, Thin Lizzy and AC/DC next month, The Cult, Girlschool and Motorhead later in the year and hopefully a few others[y].

Another TOG here, Haven't listened to the charts since my teens. Lack of buying therefore lack of influencing the charts.

Thanks,

Not sure how they can work out the charts these days. It used to be easy as you could only buy real records /CD's but much more difficult now with all the various download possibilities - legal or otherwise. Thumbs up for Black Sabbath, my husband will only do the ironing if he can listen to heavy metal!

Look it happens, you lose sight of the charts, ten years later you have no idea what people listen to. You become your parents. That's the programme!

LOL. How true. I never thought I would ever lose sight of what was in the Top 10 (thus dating myself) but the day I hit 40 it was as if a switch was flicked in my head and I no longer cared. I'm with the self-styled old git, hackney guy and say my preferred listening is Lyric FM - our equivalent to classic FM

Don't listen to the charts as they're full of acts aimed for the teen market, you may get one or two 'decent' acts if you're lucky.

I prefer to listen to Radio 6 or Xfm.

So he truly is.. (wait for it).. 'Iron Man'...

I'll get my coat.

But, before I do...in full grumpy old man mode I very rarely listen to music on the radio any more. Occasionally Radio 2 on a Saturday. My #1 button on the car radio is tuned to Radio 4.

Well I switched to Radio Two last year after I was fed up of just listening to Moyles and Mills talk about themselves and not pay any music.

HAving said that Evans/Wright/Terry do play their fair share of todays top 40 hits (and talk a bit too much also but at least not about themselves).

Personally I tend to avoid all this rap stuff (which seems to equate for 35 out of the top 40 songs) but am loving the new Kasabian tune, Fire, which Scrooge it may please you may be pleased to know (or not) will probably be number one by the end of the week.

Daniel Merriweather and Red is an amazing tune, plus Lilly Allen is pretty cool, not all crap!

In a curious inversion to this as I am working in the living room listening to the DVD-A version of 'Pet Sounds' the Less Favoured One has one of my Sun era Johnny Cash CDs as the soundtrack for her A level revision.
