Parents are supposed to be on the VS201 tonight but instead they rang me from Regal Hotel saying they are not on the plane. I took the liberty of doing online check-in for them yesterday (19 hrs before the flight) and was surprised that the seat map doesn't work. I knew then the flight is quite full.

So at the airport for check-in, the agent told them there are Sydney passengers whom already spent sometime waiting in HK and hoping they can have priority and asked my parents if they are happy to take a later flight. They are now booked on tomorrow QF29 and VS have put them up at the airport Regal hotel for the night. As compensation they have been given a pair of return tickets too. The agent also said even they are flying on QF they can still claim their FC mileage. At least now I don't have to get up at 4am to drive to Heathrow to pick them up, I can have a lie in [y]

Are there any restrictions on these free tickets such as limited available seats on each flight etc similar to buying tickets with miles?

the only restriction I know of is that you can't go all the way to sydney on them obviously because you have to stop in HKG, not sure about anything else

Yeah there are some restrictions, they book into an N fare bucket, as long as there are those available for the flight they are good to go. It can be hard at times to find that fare class, so if worst comes to worst they can claim miles instead.

Not quite - if you are xDB'd off a SYD flight and given a Red Select voucher, then they can be used on a future SYD flight.
