Well, the eargerly anticipated summer family jaunt had arrived (this time with the addition of Dragonbaby's bestfriend). We'd travelled up the night before and stayed at the Sheraton Skyline and had gone over to the Sofitel to meet jerseyboy (Wayne) and his lovely wife who were due to fly out with BA in First the next day too.
I'd used ONLI 23hrs and 59 mins from departure and was miffed (to say the least) to find that although Mr DL were where we had been since I booked the tickets (4 and 5K) DB and the BF had been moved (from where they had been pre-assigned until literally a minute before OLCI opened). At this point I should point out that DB had pted to travel with her friend in economy [:0] , the deal being that BF paid for her airfare and Mr DL and I covered BFs hotel and food bills. I was rather touched (flabbergasted actually [:0]) that DB opted to sit down the back .Anyway, I digress.
They'd been re-assigned horrible seats (40E and F) from the much nicer seats that Premier had assigned when we booked the seats (38H and K).The only option I had was to move them to 58 H and K with the hope I could move them forward again when we arrived at the airport the next day.
On arrival at LHR the next day we were swiftly checked in by the nicest UC agent we've encountered for a while who was able to move the girls forward again (44 H and K) and offered a cheap upgrade 129 to move them to PE (the flight was overbooked in Y). BF didn't think it worth the expense (DB's face was priceless [:D])so they stayed where they were.Boarding passes in hand up we went in the lift and through the UC wing. BF was agog (the last time she travelled abroad was 10 years ago)and on a charter flight. A quick foray in the Duty Free and we arrived to a just opening CH. BF was completely overwhelmed by this -I managed to book a massage for DB and a manicure for BF (Mr DL and I were already booked in for a hydrating facial and haircut respectively).
Now, I know I've moaned about service levels in the LHR CH before but on this visit the it was fantastic. Attentive, beyond belief and to make the trip even better the roof garden was re-opened that morning(clearance from BAA having being granted apparently).I only had the one mojito [}:)] and Mr DL was also similarly restrained. DB and BF spent most of the time in the Jacuzzi and steam room and after the final call for the flight we left for gate 22.Arriving at the gate it became apparent that we weren't going anywhere quickly and the UC passengers were rounded up and sent back to the CH.
We managed a bowl of Eton Mess each and a nice glass of Sauvignon for Mr DL and I before being re-called to the gate.
Most of the passengers had boarded so there was no queueing and once on board (having said goodbye to DB and BF) we were offered a quick glass of champagne which was duly accepted). My suite was filthy, chipped (badly), and in desperate need of some TLC. Once airborne there was a noticeable delay before the extras basket and drinks and lunch orders were taken.I opted for the usual T10 +T (as today would be the last time I would enjoy a T10+T as it was being removed on the inbound VS 8) and had procured a couple of limes in the CH. The food however was absolutely inedible. I'd opted for the smoked salmon salad (unpleasant), pie (absolutely vile) and cheesecake (tasted nothing like). The cheese was OK but nothing startling (UC food should be more than just passable).Afternoon tea was much of the same (the same sort of sandwiches we had on the way to BGI in March), and as I'm no fan of adulterated sandwiches I passed on these and had a couple of cups of Earl Grey instead.
The cabin crew were attentive but the drop in service level on a full flight is very noticeable (the FSM was very visible and worked like a Trojan [y]).
VS have a fab product on the ground and the crew on my last 4 UC flights have done a stirling job with the product that remains. The trouble is UC is not a cheap option and it's a tough marketplace. For people who know what the service used to offer not that long ago (say 5 years) the short term benefits pre- flight may not be enough to compensate for the shabby offering once you leave the ground (and I'm talking VS product not crew).
Throw in a reduced UC baggage allowance (because that's what it is) to many destinations (routes I use in the main) in addition to all the other subliminal cuts, and passengers will start considering the other options available to them.
Right I'm going to go and enjoy the last hour of the 4th July -fat chance of sleep due to the fireworks (another glass of vino may aid restful sleep though [}:)]).Tomorrow =Vegas. Yeeha [:D][:D]

Thanks for a simply super TR[y][y][y]

Your experience with seats only goes to show that you can never take it for granted[V] Notwithstanding all the caveats and words of warning that VS issue, it is still a disappointment when it does not pan out as planned.

LOL It is funny when they leave the nest, young ones want to be independent (but only to an extent[}:)]) My friends offspring love to do their own thing, but always make themselves available (avec friends) when Dad rents a swish Villa in the south of France.

I know you were apprehensive about the Clubhouse service and I glad to see that it was as good as Nottingham Nick & I experienced the other week. The on board menu however is a different kettle of fish- we all know that VS is finding times tough, but if you 'Keep It Simple' then you stand a chance of satisfying the majority.

What VS can ill afford right now is leaving a bad taste in people's mouths that gets them looking elsewhere

Great TR DL, thanks.

I am impressed and disappointed in DB, surely you have brought her up to know that the ONLY way to fly is in UC, so much for the 'once you've flown UC you won't turn right again' saying, poor parenting in my book [V][}:)][:D] (but well done for her sticking with her friend)

Hope you have a great trip.

Thanks for the TR. Enjoyed the read, shame about the product. I'm crossing many digits that our first UC experience later in the year will not be a disappointment, but I guess we never experienced the best of times. And we do know we enjoy the CH.

Seems like a bargain to me, but kudos to DB for sticking with BF. When The Favoured One was gearing up for his current US road trip his uncle, who works for an air freight company, offered to have a word with his BA chum to get the LFO upgraded. The LFO was very conflicted by this and said he wanted to stick with his mates as it was 'their' trip.

If you happen upon 5 ex Sheffield University lads, one of them is The Favoured One. But, unless you're staying in Hooters [;)] maybe you won't..

That is good - service at LHR has become variable of late (surly check in agents, long queues at UC now check in is moved upstairs and extreme variability in the clubhouse) but glad that on your day it was good.

BAA or VS or both just have not got premium boarding right at the gates in the shabby T3 pier - each time of late my flights have departed from there it's been chaos - why don't they use two bridges when they're available?

Interestingly, on the VS56 on 2 July, T10 was there but Bombay Sapphire wasn't - btw, the new vodka over ice is quite tasty!

WOhWOhW can't VS offer something simply, easy to prepare and tasty? I just don't eat on board anymore, perhaps a sandwich or a plate of cheese ...

Absolutely!

Sterling TR, thanks DL, and comments completely shared [y].

DB is rueing the day she ever agreed to stick with BF [}:)]. The indulged one hasn't flown in Y (apart from the annual winter hop to see the DL Elders in sunny Spain) for a long time and if nothing else it's a stark reminder about how luck she usually is [:)].

Excellent TR, DL. Pity parts of the flight weren't as excellent, but you've whetted my appetite for my trip to SFO on Tuesday. And speaking of appetite, you've helped me decide what not to eat on board. [:D]

Great TR, must say I haven't managed to get my offspring to turn right when we travel together, but I live in hope - particularly now they have partners!

Good to hear the CH is up to scratch but agree completely that this will not be enough if customers are feeling they are receiving a poor or inconsistent onboard experience.

A great honest trip report [y] Its always a shame to have a good start on the ground and then 'so-so' in the air, especially with food and cleanliness as these are areas I imagine are easier to get right? As you say, it does put the cost into perspective.

I suspect when DB is without her BF that she'll be more than happy to rough it in UC with her parents [:)]

Thanks,
Sarah

Great TR DL, it is a real pity standards have been allowed to slip so, VS will loose previously loyal pax if they don't get their act together in the air. So DB didn't like it down the back of the bus then? Why am I not surprised? Those PE UG's were excellent pity BF didn't think it was worth it.

Great report, shame about the abismal food again! They may start filling more of the seats if they get this right. It doesn't have to cost heaps either.
