Right, having decided to add a few nights in Vegas onto my Florida trip in Jan, i'm trying to work out the best way to get to Vegas (i'll be on a reward upper flight).

1) Fly to Vegas - No chance of getting a G ticket!!!
2) LA then drive to Vegas - would like to do the drive, not massively fussed with seeing LA despite never being there
3) San Fran then fly Virgin America (love it) - Would be on a 747 to SF which is preffered..

Any thoughts/examples of routes people have taken from the experts???

Cheers,

Have driven between LA and Vegas loads of times so I would recommend that choice!

Just not in a convertible.

Seriously though, when are you looking to do this ? and have you considered flying between LA and Vegas?

2 or 3 or Dave's additional 4. Just not 1.

2 isn't a classic US drive, just a whole lot of nothing (except for In'n'Out Burger in Barstow). It is fun in a convertible if you stop just outside Vegas, drop the hood and then cruise the Strip.

Have flown to SFO and on to LAS.

Also LAX and flown on to LAS.

And flown to LAX and driven.

Also flown to LAX, flown to LAS and driven to LAX [;)].

Scrooge is your man for the best comment but put it this way, a long flight followed by a long drive is not good. A long flight followed by a short flight works well. Go for LAX then fly / connect to LAS.

Cheers all,

I generally prefer the San Fran option;

- A-zone in the 747 is the best place to fly
- get to fly Virgin america again
- Love SF despite being there already...

But would love to do that that last bit of the drive!!

Also has the benefit of being in the clubhouse at 07:00... ;)

Well you could always fly into SFO and fly back from LAX, honestly facing LA traffic after flying on the 7/23 is not something I looked forward to doing, in fact I only did it once and that was enough for me.

However as long as your not looking to fly back to the UK on a Sunday the drive from Vegas to LA isn't that bad.

2 or 3 ... see which route has the G's on the dates you want to travel and go from there I guess. I'd prefer 3 personally but the drive from LAX is quite fun.

Thanks,
Sarah

I once drove to Vegas after landing on a 3 hour delayed VS7 - something I don't wish to repeat as being tired made the drive very difficult.

Every other time I've driven, I've always had at least one local night in a hotel and the drive has been fantastic.

I did option 2 again yesterday [:)].It's an easy drive (in a decent car/ SUV) and with 4 of us and huge ammounts of baggage the only viable option this time.I've also done the options of flying into SFO and LAX and connecting up to LAS. Day and timing of arrival into LAS is also a factor- arriving into LAS on a Friday afternoon is horrendous.
There are generally more reward seats on the LAX route (two flights daily).
IMHO LA is fab [y].
So is Vegas [:D].

I've driven from both LA and San Francisco to Las Vegas, but only as Tink has said, after a night in a local hotel. Early start the next morning and the drive is no problem [:D]

Clubhouse at 07.00, but the flight to SF leaves at 09.30, doesnt give much time...I am doing that one in December, then Virgin America across to Vegas

One thing to consider is flying into LAX, driving till you get to Victorville. There is a hotel called the Green Tree which is kinda nice, it also has a very nice restaurant in it, that would work as an overnight stop then drive into Vegas (about 3 hours from there) the next morning.

Howdy all thanks again,

I did the San Fran route last year - great fun and we managed to squeeze in a lot of fun in the clubhouse before departure (and on the plane of course).

I'm off to Florida on the way back so the route looks it will be something like this;

LHR-SFO 1 night stay over
SFO-LAS 3 nights ([oo][oo][:0][:$])
LAS-MCO 2 nights to do the annual theme park trip
Drive to Sanibel to recover for the week
MIA-LHR

Can't wait, although not looking forward to the length flight from Vegas to Orlando in economy!!!

Myself and a friend are flying to SFO then VA i cant wait, I especially want to fly on a VS 747 while there are some! Also to experience Virgin America and the SFO clubhouse having read reports I am looking forward to it!

Hope you have a great time.

It always takes me days to do SFO to LAS - We went out to SFO on the 23rd of May and didnt get to Vegas until the 6th June

LHR to SFO, Drive to Yosemite, Yosemite to Death Valley and then on to Vegas before going back to Gatwick.

There is so much to see in the US SW between lounges :O)
