But never the less totally against the ticket rules.

Hmmm, and don't the conditions also state the that carrier can change their mind / alter the rules on their whim etc. or So let's give hg the nod here?

Just a thought, we had a similar problem a few years ago when we booked a QM2 transatlantic. We got around the problem by getting a one way W class for me and then got my wifes ticket using miles (companion ticket). Overall the deal did not work out too bad as we had the miles might be worth considering.

Interestingly VS do sell cheap one- ways from some destinations to the UK. eg I recently purchased a 1 way DEL- LHR for just over 200.
Ex- UK the price is about 750.

I recently had a similar issue with needing to come back home one way from the US to LHR early, and the suggestion I was given by VS was to book it as a return IAD-LHR-IAD (with about a month inbetween the two flights) and not use the last leg (as opposed to risking it with doing it the other way round or paying for a one way fare)

I think you can book the return for up to a year in advance, and the return does not need to be from the same destination. You could fly to say JFK in October and book a return from MCO in summer 2010. Maybe get a TA Westbound cruise or save up just 12500 miles for a one way trip in economy to NY

I have recently booked a one way flight to HKG in UC for 1269 which I thought a great bargain.

I believe a gentlemen was discussing oneway fares on this forum a few days ago, just found this on the VAustralia home page
http://www.vaustralia.com.

Now selling one-way fares to LA.

LA one-way International Economy from $579*

VAustralia states;
While one-way fares are not new to the arena, V Australia is the first airline to offer one-way fares across ALL of its fare brackets to the US, including its lowest lead-in fares, offering one-way International Economy tickets from just $579*, approximately 70% lower than the lowest one-way fare currently offered by competitor airlines.[:)]

True, but they have also been running a $800 rt fare, still $579 is still better than having to pay for a full fare ticket.

I think some Travel Agents can offer decent one way fairs too. We took a cruise on the QE2 3 year back, and I normally book independantly, however their one way PE ticket to JFK worked out at 300 as opposed to over 800 on the VA website. This was bang on half the current offer price for a PE return at the time.
