Well, that's me definitely not flying BA long haul again - single bag allowance in Y for a trip to the states just doesn't cut it at the rates they charge, and short haul, well with the current trends there's going to be little reason to use them for that either soon which is a definite shame.

You may want to read the information again as the one piece in Y is for UK, Europe and worldwide other than USA (and a couple others).

Sadly not anymore as it will now be one bag only between the UK and the US. The only routes with 2 bags in WT are 'Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and direct connections between India and USA, Bermuda and Canada'.

One bag is fine on the way out but may be more of a problem flying back home (at least in my case [:w])

I stand corrected!

Didn't realise BA flew direct from India to the US. Would seem a little unfair if a Y PAX flew in to LHR from India then on to the US is allowed 2 cases whilst a Y PAX start from LHR on the same US flight gets 1.

I suppose good news for VS and the US carriers.

One big difference between BA & Virgin new policy:
With BA additional bags can be booked online from USA for only $48 per bag.
With VS its $150 per extra bag!

Looks like you will be able to pay VS online from early 2010. link (Point 8).

If you paid BA at checkin like VS at the moment then it's $60 for the 1st additional bag and then $140 for each additional bag

Would it not be better to pay the 32 for an extra bag and get 23kg than 30 for an extra 9kg in an 'over weight' bag?

Or have I got my sums wrong. Hard to do maths when you only have ickle paws!

Don't forget, the leg with the highest amount applies to the whole journey - so a pax starting in India would get the same allowance to their destination.

With the first quote, I forgot to put a tongue smilie at the end, so sorry!

With the second quote, I thought that's what I meant.[?] The point I was trying to say if Mr A travelling in Y gets 2 cases all the way from India to the US via LHR and Mr B gets on the same LHR to US flight as Mr A and also travelling in Y, he only gets 1 case. Seems a little harsh.[:?]

My further reading is that the allowance to the USA will still be 2 *23 KG bags in Y

I think that the heading in the table

'Allowances for Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and direct connections between India and USA, Bermuda and Canada'

is worded badly when compared to the table for the current allowances to similar destinations:

'Allowances for USA, Canada, Caribbean, Ghana, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria and South America'

As its unlikly I'll be flying BA I'm not concerned but maybe a refular BA flyer could email them to clarity?

Aye, some clarification is most definitely needed, my reading of it was only one bag to USA, so given that two very clearly opposing interpretations are coming out of this they really need to clarify it - if only to avoid the unfortunate circumstance of losing customers due to mis-interpretation of their policies.

I think the table is a summary of the changes only, not the entire policy.

This is from the Travel News section of BA website:

- Customers travelling in World Traveller on flights to and from the Americas* (except Brazil) will have a free allowance of one bag weighing no more than 23kgs. This means that the World Traveller allowance will be the same for the majority of British Airways routes

- World Traveller customers travelling to and from Brazil, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and on through-checked journeys between India and the USA, Canada and Bermuda will retain a two-bag free allowance of up to 23kgs per bag

- Gold and Silver Executive Club cardholders will be entitled to two pieces of luggage on all routes when they travel in World Traveller, Euro Traveller and Domestic

- There will be a reduction in charges for the first bag in excess of the free allowance on longhaul

- The cost of extra bags on UK domestic routes will be brought in line with other shorthaul European services at 35 per bag

- Heavy bag charge for bags between 23kgs and 32kgs will increase from 25 to 30. The special bag charge for items that exceed the maximum dimension will no longer apply.

* Americas routes affected: USA, Canada, Bermuda, Argentina, Mexico and the Caribbean
