The long awaited time to updateMrs Scrooges laptop came last night, her 5 year old XP home instalation had gotten buggy enough that at last she had had enough, so after backing up 20 gigs worth of stuff it was time to install Win7 RC.

A quick format later and we are ready to go...... If only life were that easy, of course the copy I downloaded had an issue, mild panic sets in, no spare OS in the house ! and Mrs Scrooge loves her laptop.

Then I remembered I had a copy of Win7 beta, which of course is not supported anymore, MS being their normal helpful seleves came up with the idea of buying Vista, but that is just not going to do it, Mrs S hates Vista.

So now I am left with an ethical problem, do I hit a torrent site for the win7 iso or just hunt craigslist for xp home.....

As an interim temporary step why not re-install XP, then at some point when Win7 is completely stable and predictable have another go. PM me if you need help with the XP re-install; it's not that difficult.

I would love to, however the XP disk has gone MIA ! I have a copy of pro floating around, but the lappy takes home and MS are total bastards when it comes to that.

You could always make to switch to something like Ubuntu which is free to download?

Another option is to search eBay for someone selling an XP CD rom. There's usually quite a few and you can get XP very cheap now.

I personally wouldn't download any software via Torrents. It more often than not been tampered with, viruses, trojans and spyware are often added.

I know several people who have downloaded software via a Torrents and ended up with more problems.

She who thinks she must be obeyed will not go for a linux system....

I am actually doing both, win7 rc from a torrent I trust and it has just dawned on me that I have a couple of old pro machines sitting around, so I will just give MS one of those keys and activate windows that way should the torrent come up bad.

Sarah,
My apologies, I was of course assuming that Scrooge has a valid license for the software he requires and has simply mislaid the media.

No worries, Tim. My post wasnt aimed specifically at you or Scrooge, just a friendly reminder to members that while we can discuss pretty much anything here in Off Topic, the law does still apply. If members want to use Torrents then that is up to them, but we shouldnt publically promote or encourage that on V-Flyer. I would hope all of our members would agree with that. [:)]

Thanks,
Sarah

Her Grace, once again, is quite correctly the paragon of virtue! [y]

As for the title, I thought he was saying he hated Mrs. Scrooge which would have been a disturbing post for a public forum. [V]

Yes, just to set the record straight, I have lot's of licensees for the OS's, however due to MS and OEM polices no actually os's...well that's not 100% true, but all should be taken care off today.

Anyways, just to echo Highflyer's comment, the download and distribution of pirated software is a big no no and not something I encourage at all.

Get Rid and get a Mac Book

Yeah, not going to happen, the wife hates Mac OS's so she won't do that.

And let's face it (here we go again) my PC will out perform any MAC made, so it won't happen with mine either.... Now please, let's not start a Mac v PC war on here again [:p]

Yeah Yeah
I have both, High spec PC and Mac Book

Pc for work and Mac for play.

Pc crashes and needs constant attention like a Dog
Mac looks after itself like a Cat

Must confess until I had a Mac I never would have bought one, but after a small frustration with Vista and then lobbing a laptop across a room in a childish temper gave it a bash. The rest is history, Well apart from some decoration to a wall where the laptop hit

No More on the subject mentioned

It would be my pleasure.

Actually rig that Windows 7 launch party thing and I will be more than happy to show them how nice and stable Vista has been for me, actually my machine has been up and running for a couple of months with no down time now..... Guess at some point I had better download the updates for it though [:I]

Vista has been fairly stable for me too.

I run it as a guest OS in VMWare Workstation on my work HP Laptop which runs XP.

The work OS (XP) is really tied down and I have no desire to mess with it so find running a virtual personal machine the best option.
The only issue I have is with the RAM limitation of 32bit XP which only allows me 3gb despite having 4gb installed.
I did install guest of Windows 7 beta and had a play, it seemed ok but I admit I did not do a lot with it.
I will probably have another go with RC and see how it performs.
