Forget about it, it's a marketing thing, IMHO it's next to worthless.

If you're prepared to pay very high fares to get a companion seat, go for it. As Scrooge says, they're generally worthless unless your company pays D or J in Upper and you can use it in such cases. The best option seems to be one S in PE and in that case the companion voucher could actually save you money.

Other than that it's worthless and a gimmick.

I have estimated that for PE flight I want to take, the companion seat would save around 50. For the agro involved and loss of miles/tier points its not worth it.

Thanks

Agree with Slinky, the best use is on an S PE fare, where you could make quite a saving, so they aren't totally useless, but like all rewards, you have to be clever and flexible to get the best use of them.

They can be good money - we got a full-fare J in Upper to Sydney with companion ... which cost less then two restricted Z fares! So we spent less and had limo transfers in the UK, Oz and HK - definately worthwhile then!

You have to be clever and work hard to get value for money.

Can you still claim the free John Lewis vouchers for travelling in certain fare classes if you're using a free companion seat ticket as well? It seems to me that the required fare classes would have some degree of overlap.

I can't imagine there would be many situations where the full-fare ticket, the free companion seat and the free vouchers would be a better deal than two cheap tickets, in whichever class, where the full-fare ticket and the free companion seat without the free vouchers wouldn't be a better deal than two cheap tickets, but I would be surprised if there weren't any such situations at all.

I've got the most value from them for my family on S fares to MCO. The huge increase in taxes and fees in recent years has not helped.
