Hi and welcome to V-Flyer.

For purely earning miles, the Virgin Black AmEx will earn you the most miles at 4 miles for every 1 spent.

I am not sure what the 'good benefits with Virgin' are you get with the AmEx Plat charge card. I have one of those also, and I can't say I am aware of any specific benefits with VS (you get VS Au status with a Centurion card, but the annual fee is well over 1k now, compared to the 300 annual for the Plat card). It is good for the travel insurance, hotel status etc and of course you do earn MR points, which can be transferred to VS miles, but you only earn at 1 mile per 1, so not anywhere near as good as the VS Black AmEx.

Welcome to V-Flyer, Paul.

Which card do you use for what?

If it is which card do I book the tickets with to get the most miles, then it has to be the Black Virgin Amex as it earns you 4 points per .

If it is to get the best protection i.e. insurance etc. then it has to be the 'proper' Amex card.

I don't think the choice of card will affect your ability to get miles upgrades for your family.

Or am I missing the point? [:D]

Doesn't matter anymore Nick - you don't have to book on the card to receive the insurance cover. [y]

Guys -

I can't comment on the Platinum Amex, but I do have the Black Virgin Amex, which I use for absolutely any purchase whatsoever to maximise mileage- and you get 2 miles per pound, you are only awarded 4 miles per pound when buying a flight through the VA website, or a holiday through VH.

I do think that we should start a campaign to be able to earn tier points on the back Amex in the UK though, just like our neighbours in the US can do! Seriously......anyone tempted...............

Hmmmm. That depends if you want flying club to remain (just about) a frequent flyer programme. It is considerably a brand loyalty scheme now. Tier points are about, if not, the only thing left that awards you status through flying. Even though it would help me a bit, as I buy more than fly, I'm not sure I would like some one to have more privilege than me because they buy more on their Amex.....

...but, of course, it has happened because of the US Amex so why should we be left out......?

The same could be said for every FF program out there now.
