My new card arrived this morning. In these days when we are being encouraged to use less packaging I am amazed with how the card was packaged. Shipped by DHL the bag contained an outer black box about 10' x10' inside of which was another black box and inside of that was the card in a soft sleeve. OK so the pack also contained a small booklet but honestly!

I suppose they have to try to justify the new membership fee.

Howard covered the packaging in good detail here.

I want to sell Richards on eBay, but he wont let me [:D]

Thanks,

What a waste of packaging for something as basic as a credit card. [:0]

Thanks Sarah, I thought I remembered reading something about it a while back but couldn't remember where. [?]

I don't think I will be renewing in February somehow.

At least it's less likely to 'go missing in the post'.

You have to activate it so it wouldn't be much use to anyone.

I've had 3 cards not reach me this year alone (even when sent special delivery) but boring looking post seems to get through.
Not sure what you can do with unactivated cards but someone out there seems to know.

I wonder if Amex have dropped a clanger here and lost more custom than they bargained for[:?]

As the Reporter and Hackneyguy have said, there are other products on the Market that provide similar levels of service but at lower cost - Amex might be smarting at the numbers who have defected as a result of their ridiculous price hike.

Could it not work the other way though for AmEx? So, a chunk of the current Cent card holders might decide to not renew, but with the customers they keep paying nearly 3 times the current annual fee does it matter? With less card holders, it is actually costing them less as they don't have to give the benefits to as many people and with potentially a good chunk of the Cent card holders probably going down to just a Plat, they are still keeping them as AmEx customers overall.

Kind of - some of the new benefits are not cheap per customer for AmEx, given their inability to negotiate properly; I know approximately what AmEx are paying VS for the Au status and subsequent CH visits and it's not chicken feed by any stretch.

They knew some customers would not pay the new fee, and for a variety of reasons. It's all down to the individual and value they can derive from the benefits and service on offer. On the latter though, its interesting to note that AmEx are not offering a certain service benefit to every customer, and that can have a huge cost value benefit to the end customer, but is probably the most expensive overhead/benefit for AmEx to implement.

AmEx ran into some huge issues trying to implement chip and pin with a titanium based product, as it's the only market in which they currently need it - this put back the launch schedule by a long margin and in the interim, the current economic situation has happened; and that has changed the landscape for them for a good proportion of their customer base.

You know, I put my Platinum AmEx between my right cheek and briefs when running. I can't help to think that a piece of metal would be painful.

So you're looking for someone with a Platinum Amex between his left cheek and his briefs? ;)

The best two lines I've seen all year (and oh so appropriate, for SO many reasons):

See you in the lounge, Richard. I'm the tit waving the 1,800 bit of metal.

Or you could kill two brids with one stone and place it between your cheeks; but I would not recommend sitting down with haste!

Strange way to get an imprint.

Have you not thought of upgradung to chip and pin and a swipe mechanism?
