Anydody had any strange IRIS issues recently?

Coming home yesterday through T3 the IRIS machine wouldnt recognise me. I have had this happen 3 times now, but I used it successfully coming home from TLV the month before and I have used IRIS for I imagine 3-4 years now, and every other month for the past 1-2 years, so I am a frequent user of the system. What happens is that the machine tells me to look into the mirror but doesnt start 'clicking' to take pictures, it just looks at my eyes for a long time then tries again, and again, and then kicks me out with the blue arrow.

Had a long chat with a staffer at T3 who after checking that I had no contacts on could only suggest that I re-visit IRIS registration on my next visit to check my profile. The only thing I can think of is that these are either 'tests' in the system to auto-reject every now and then or this is something to do with the fact that my eyes change colour - though that shouldnt affect my irises.

I just wondered if others had experienced the odd blue arrow during an otherwise successful IRIS registration?

Thanks,
Sarah

Funny old thing Sarah this happened to me yesterday too. What terminal did you fly into ? T3 left hand side IRIS for me.

I too reported it to the staffer who said it was becasue it recognised my bag as me ? (work that out if you can !). I ended up having to kneel doen to the bottom mirror in second booth after being kicked out and I noticed it was happening to everyone.

Still quicker than the huge lines tho ....

Yup, left hand booth in T3, though I tried the right hand booth afterwards and that still didn't work. It let through my IRIS registered friends which shows that the booth was working, just not for me, which made me look a bit of a pillock.

Thanks,
Sarah

I had to kneel down in the right hand one - perhaps it was three + strikes then out ? Not sure but it certainly was misbeaving to others in the line too. Like you I have never had any problems before so think there must have been a glitch somewhere yesterday.

Just wish there was a staffer nere by to witness the issues.

When I registered with Iris a year or two back, they did tell my that my registration would only be valid for so 4 years or so, and would expire in 2012 or something.

I can't remember if it was tied into my passport expiry date (which would make sense, but 2012 is a bit too early - and that's far too much joined up thinking), or just a random date - but if you've been using it for 4 years, maybe your registration's expired?

PS - your eyes change colour? Wow, I'm envious!

I think the issue with the bag thing that the staff were referring to is that Iris has a sensor in it which detects your approx height as you enter to ascertain which cameras to activate. If you enter with your bag slightly in front of you then the sensor incorrectly senses the bag rather than you and then activiates the cameras closest to the height of your bags. I learned this lesson some time ago after constantly having to kneel (even though I'm only 5ft 2) and now always ensure my bags are well behind me. [:I]

Not had a problem recently but I too recall a two year registration period not four ...

As to kneeling, someone once tipped me that as you enter, put your hand on your head and waggle your fingers (no, not a con!) and the system thinks you are taller than you are so you get the higher scanners!

The IRIS registration is a 2 year rolling registration, therefore, as long as you use IRIS as least once every 2 years, it will still remember you.

Not used it for a while, but never had any problems when I have.

I usually carry a ruck-sack so I guess the sensors don't get as confused with me and I have always used the scanner at the top (even though I still have to bend my knees as I'm too tall).

It was closed at MAN T1 the other day to my annoyance. I then lined up in the line next to iris (admittedly it was the all passports line) to have a customs officer bark at me US style, I couldn't believe it. Pointed out I was only stood there because Iris was out and I wasn't wanting to join the back of a very long queue after walking all the way down to Iris to see it out of order. If they wanted to redirect people the out of order sign should've been at the top of channel. I thought all of this was obvious in anycase. Anyway, she chilled out and I got seen too quickly in the end.

I did notice that the screen of the one I last used was dirty and covered in what looked like finger prints and smudges, so it would surprise me if they need a damn good clean! Right hand side IRIS m/c from now on me thinks....

Here's a question.... if you're registered for IRIS, can you use these new ePassport gates (see link to BRS info), or do you absolutely have to have one of the new Biometric passports?

Cheers

Used the left IRIS machine in T3 last week without problems - I even got to use the top scanner!

Well given it uses the image of your face stored in the chip in the passport I'd lean heavily towards a 'Yes you need a new passport'
