Have to assume the best plan is for major shut eye on the HKG-SYD leg to try and arrive fully refreshed at 7.30am in SYD.

Given leave LHR at 9pm has anyone any tips on the best sleep pattern to follow, mainly for mini NH

Our current thoughts are to get her off to sleep soon as, for about 6-7 hrs ([;)]), then 'pretend its daytime' for remaining 6 + the hr in HKG CH then evening/sleep on HKG-SYD leg. (sounds great in principle..[B)])

How do the CC theme the LHR/HKG, is it classed as night flight throughout?

Well the cabin is dark the whole way and breakfast is served before landing even though you land in the afternoon in Hong Kong.

Cheers Tink.

[:?] thought this maybe the case.. assume most pax will therefore use full leg as a sleeping flight..
I see us doing a lot of walking down the back then...[}:)] coz the last think we really want is her up for the best part of the second leg..

I persoanlly never sleep when going over LHR-HKG-SYD. I find what works best for me is to book my hotel in Sydney one day early so the room is ready early in the morning and crash when I arrive ready to wake up late afternoon then have a decent late nights sleep and you will be fine (well I am !).

I have tried sleeping, not sleeping, eating at local times, eating when hungry, prescribed sleeping pills and homeopathic, I even signed up for a personalised jetlag programme but to date nothing seems to work! Justin on the other hand just sails through and is never affected at all so I guess everyone is different. However Jetlag is a small price to pay for visiting such a wonderful country.

Mdvipond has done this route with his family and should have some good tips for coping with mini NH - as I recall it involves much bribery with M&M's.

Very true Jacki, although don't believe the good Dr was as 'hardcore' as us attempting it in one-hit..[B)]

For us adults, get round most of it, few Transatlantic style hrs on/off min NH's normal pattern again can cope.. [|:)]

But messing around this much with a 4yr old's body clock ain't that easy!

I've always had trouble sleeping on the 2nd leg as have always had a bit of kip on the 1st leg and just not been tired afterwards (until arriving!). Maybe try and get some sleep for the 1st few hours of the 1st leg and then stay awake for the rest of the flight and at HKG?

The best way i've found is go round the other way and take the night flight from LAX to SYD. Managed a whole day's tourism and even climbed the bridge after getting in early morning!!

Have to agree that the LAX routing is better. I did several LHR-LAX-AKLs last year and flew Saturday, arrived Monday morning at 06:00, started work at 09:00, worked a 5 day week then returned home on Friday evening. i seem to recall the trick being alcohol and melatonin though this might not be suitable for mini-NH.

Hey, we're hardcore! Just did the one-hit thing coming back instead.

As I recall, the return flight left SYD early eveningish, so we ate, watched a film, then bedded Tizer down for the night. For me, it goes a bit fuzzy after that [:I] but Mrs V reliably informs me that we woke a rather groggy Tizer when we came into HKG, showered her down in the Clubhouse, then put her back to bed again when we set off on the LHR leg. She woke in the 'early hours' (about 5 hours out of LHR) and was happy as a lark.

If you're leaving LHR at 9pm - and if mini NH can take it - it could be worth adopting a similar approach. Treat it as a 'late night' for her, let her have a bite to eat and a movie, then settle her down for a kip. Wake her again at HKG, then chances are she'll be knackered enough to sleep through the SYD leg. Could work; could lead to a screaming, overtired 4 year old. Only remember me if it's the former...

I have always found when flying LHR-SIN-AKL-CHC the hard part to be SIN-AKL. The first leg is fine as you take off at around 10pm and sleep. The issue arises for me when you depart SIN at around 5pm local and attempt to sleep, I always, always seem to wake over Northern Territory and believe 'I am almost there', of course the following 4-5 hours go very slowly. So maybe some form of medicine for the second leg might be a good option. When we were little and doing the MCO-YQX/BGR-LGW run I always remember mother knocked us out with the good old Capol!

For a nanny you really should have booked with Gulf Air. I believe they still have their Sky Nanny service in Business, where by a nanny looks after the kids all flight!

I have followed a similar practice, with a few hours napping between HKG and SYD then into hotel nice and early with wake up early afternoon. When travelling, I try to get into time zone of arrival as quickly as possible even if VS's meal schedules don't help ... it's a bit difficult to SYD though!

Maybe even fuzzy now as the flight leaves Sydney early afternoon. [:p]
