A close friend of mine works with VS but not for them and when we were discussing my miles he said that I had to try to burn them as soon as possible, but would not say why due to a confidentiality agreement.

I do trust what he tells me, but the problem is I have 800k miles and no where really to go with them for good few months. Has any one else heard any rumours about something bad coming our way? Of course it would be better if you are not bound by a confidentiality agreement!

I have a feeling it might be a devaluation or something coming up with Star Alliance...

No idea about Virgin but I have heard the very same about BA miles from what I call a very reliable source - spooky or just a coincidence of the rumour mill ????

Nope, I have not heard anything.

There are rumors like this flying around about every airline right now, the big picture is it's a rumor, until something concrete comes down I wouldn't worry about it.

With both BA and VS featuring, I reckon this just a new take on the Urban Myth - seems plausible, but never from a direct source

Personally, I would be more concerned about a BA miles balance (if I had one) at present, given the size of their pension fund deficit & the possibility of Cabin Crew industrial action in the not too distant future.

That said, it was only about a year ago when SRB said that Virgin had come quite close to serious problems due to the collapse of the banking sector.

I have a slight concern over the pretty large pot of bmi miles that I've got (enough for a couple of long-haul J class redemptions). I booked next Mays' trip to Florida (on VS flights) using VS miles as the G fares were there and it was easy with flying club miles, as I could do the lot online. Maybe I should have chanced it for a day or two and tried to use up the bmi miles?

Hmm, you post a rumour from a rumour mongerer and hide the source behind a confidentiality agreement so you don't have to substantiate it.

I can think of several reasons why a write down in value of miles might happen - BUT, how often have airlines really, actually done this?

Nothing leaping out on FT, and that's usually where such rumours start.
