Booking reward flights on ba.com

Looking at taking my Mum on a surprise trip to the East Coast USA next year.

I was going to wait for the next WT+ sale and then upgrade with miles to CW, but now I am quite tempted to book CW in the current sale and then upgrade the outward leg to First.

The problem is that I want to fly into IAD and out of BOS but I cannot see a way to do this online as a reward booking. It lets you do it going in and out of the same airport online, but not multi-city.

Could I just book the flight normally and then go back in and upgrade with miles later?, or is the only way I can get around it is to book over the phone, which I believe carries a surcharge!

You have to book open jaw over the phone but you may get lucky by saying that as you can't book these online they should waive the charge. Some seem to have success with this, some don't.

Be careful as sale club fares are often non-upgradeable with miles or cash!

Just tried a booking for CW to First and it gives the same price as the CW sale, and 50k miles.

Unlike VS whose sale fares are never upgradeable with miles, you can get some good deals with BA during a sale.
