I need to spend some miles, and pondering a trip to SFO and SEA, trying out VX at the same time. [:D]

So, I don't like places that are too hot and it needs to be a time when there's likely to be UC award availability. Any suggestions?

Also want to go on the Boeing tour in Seattle? has anyone been? Is it worth the trip? Any other suggestions for things to do for a single man?

TIA!

I would say late Sept/early Oct is a good time for SFO, warm but not hot. There is loads to do there, from shopping to Alcatraz, bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, Fishermans Wharf. A good night life too. There ate quite a few theads on SFO in the travel forums and it is a popular VF destination so sure others will be along with their thoughts.

I have been in November too and the weather has been good but it was fine for me at the end of September (am not a hot weather fan)

Things to do ...

Alcatraz - especially the Night Tour - more private that the day tour plus they do extra talks etc (book on the official national park website not one of the overcharging touristy ones)

Bike the Bridge then spend some time in Sausilito (also worth a visit on its own over the weekend with its many specialist shops)

The De Young museum in Golden Gate Park - the views from the (free) tower are spectacular as well as beinf a worls class museum.

The boat tour of the bay and the trolly tour are cliches but still fun to do to get your bearings

SF Museum of Modern Art and the Buena Yerba Centre opposite for art lovers

A tour of the AT&T Baseball stadium was also interesting.

A tour of City Hall was also good (free)

Shoppings is good!

Fishermans Wharf is worth a visit (but a bit of a tourist trap)

Ghiradelli Square is worth a quick visit - art shops and I recommend eating at McCormick & Kuleto's

The Castro is worth a wander around too - 'Anchor Oyster Bar' for good seafood (but its small and you may have to wait - put your name on the board and get a drink from the bar) and 'Blush' for a v nice drop (or seven) of the old vino

With regard to Seattle, the Boeing factory is well worth a trip as well as the Musuem of Flight near to Boeing Field. There's also the Underground Tour as well as Pike Market. A trip to Hurricane Ridge perhaps or the Space Needle.

Not sure about that - we were there at this time this year and it was scorching ! Ask Fozzyo about his shoulder burns .....

Aug is a cooler time to visit IME

Apart from all the great tip Tonty and others have said above, the highlight of this Autumns trip for me was hiring a segway - total freedom to 'wander' where we liked around Golden Gate Park and the coast for a couple of hours.

I'm just about to start planning the same trip, so I hope you don't mind if I hijack some of the ideas that get posted for Seattle(though I doubt the Boeing factory tour will get the thumbs up from MrsPJH). I managed to get a couple of flights on miles for August 2010 but I had to be flexible with dates and be willing to fly midweek.

I can totally recommend the San Francisco Movie Tour. Only a small bus of about 12 to 14 people and the guide is an actor. A really fun way of seeing the city and we've been there a few times and still learnt more!

We've just done both SFO and SEA (and LA). All I can say about SEA is bring an umbrella, especially in September!

Visit the Napa valley for wine.
Actually attend a baseball game - it's great.

Weather in SF is often cold and foggy. Best month is usually October when its 70 and clear. Yes it can be hot, but those days are few and far between.

You won't want advice from someone who's lived here over 10 years, I've never even done the cable cars [:)]

As Neil said, there's a few threads, most still pretty up do date, many restaurant recommendations, mostly still valid and good, not worth adding to for the most part except to mention that if you feel tempted to go to the Cheesecake Factory at Macy's (a popular VF spot), skip it an go two floors down, they just opened Burger Bar - not even close...

Agree with HG, August can be downright cold on the western part of the city - at least by Cal standards - most days I'll see about four hours of sun at best that time of the year. We just had temperature in the 80s earlier in the week, though it's back to a more reasonable 60-something now. It's never too cold here by UK standards, but late Sept - early Oct are favorites if you want warmer weather. In the city, it's just almost never super warm either. Across the Berkeley hills, other issue, but then why would you want to go to Walnut Creek?

August does have the highest concentration of european visitors, then again May/June and fall are popular times for big conferences, so it's not like the place won't be busy anyway.

Ease of getting Gs varied historically - I'm not doing VS anymore but the Tue/Wed rule definitely applies here. There have been enough seats historically that getting upgrades close to date of departure has seldom been a problem, but reserving early has been harder. Recently, it was coming up much more easily, but that may change if business travel picks up. In the end, SFO flights seldom go out with a lot of J vacancies. The last time I saw more than a couple of empty seats was when we traveled on Dec 23rd a few years ago.

Personally, I prefer September although May was pretty warm this year for B2B and even Sept can make you sweat a tad..

A selection of things I've done...

Bike the Bridge, down to Sausalito for lunch at Horizons. Food OK, but cracking Margaritas (see my profile photo [:)]) before taking the Blue and Gold Ferry back. Hey, if Pete can make it, anyone can. [;)]

Take in a Baseball game at AT&T park. It will be an experience for you but be prepared to wrap up warm and keep an eye out for stray balls heading for you.

Yes it is touristy, but take the cable car. Powell to Hyde is pretty good but will get busy so be prepared for a wait.

Dinning wise, breakfast at Lori's is my favorite and of a few others... The Cheesecake Factory is good but busy. If you do eat there, make sure you are really, really hungry as the portions are huge and don't be afraid to ask for it to go. If it's your thing, I can recommend Ozumo on Stuert St. It's Japanese food and that can mean raw fish, but also Saki. Many of the waitresses wear kimono's and look fantastic. As a first timer, I was never made to feel foolish or silly about asking advice. Dinner cost me $125 + tip.

If in Upper, remember to visit friend to all V-Flyers and 2009 Hero, Claire Nissim, in the Clubhouse. She usually only works Mon-Thur though.

Unless you planning to travel well off the beaten path, don't hire a car as the parking charges will bankrupt you. $45 a day without in/out privileges is not unknown. Taxis are cheap enough and there is the BART and Muni too.

Enjoy the street characters. They are, to borrow a phrase from Douglas Adams, 'mostly harmless'. I think any visitor on here have a tale to tell.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Looking into availability and it's disappointing that it seems to be an A340-300 later next year to SFO [:(] Not sure I want to go all that way on my own with an inadequate entertainment system to not keep me occupied.

I did this tour in SFO -

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction ... ornia.html

http://www.urbantrekusa.com/

One of the best tours I have ever taken anywhere - you can customise to areas of interest/fitness levels, lots of tips on where to eat and go out, and Anton is a highly engaging & charismatic guide.

Anyway, advert over - but seriously - this was the highlight of my trip and probably one of the best tours I have ever taken.

Cheers
