can anyone tell me, there is a flight from heathrow to tokyo operated by virgin but on ANA can i book premium and upgrade with airmiles the same as i do with virgin. i phoned to book through virgin and they said i cannot do that but i am sure i read that i could.

You can use your ANA miles to upgrade your ANA ticket if you are in the applicable booking class (I think it starts at S class in Economy)
If you are booked on an ANA ticket you have to conform to their rules.

The only chance you have would be when it is under airport control and you are standing at the desk, Virgin can then do what it likes really.

You can't use Virgin FC miles to upgrade an ANA ticket.
