Can anyone answer the following.

I have a companion award ticket, i would like to go to LA upper class

to use the companion ticket I have to pay full fare plus the tax on the companion ticket. 8k 4k each,

ok, on the website the lowest upper class ticket is 2,500 each

is there any point in companion ticket?

To use a companion fare in Upper, it has to be a full fare unrestricted J ticket, the fare you are quoting on the website is probably a restricted Z or R ticket.

I think the theory is that a companion fare is best used on a P/E fare as you are able to book cheaper fare codes on a P/E ticket rather than a full fare unrestricted P/E ticket.

Thanks for that, but even in PE, the saving is virually nothing.

Check the P/E fare you are looking at is an S and not a W.

W is full fare unrestricted with S below that with restrictions.

Companion fare rules and uses are a little confusing [:w]

You can use a companion on a D Upper Class fare, so you may want to consider calling FC and asking them to price the D instead of the J. Or I think if you select the options online for Upper Class lowest fare, then lowest with chauffeur car it gives a D .... I think (!).

Likely it's still expensive. Also, don't forget there's a sale on at the moment and the VS23/24 to LAX is included, it will be better still to look at those fares.

Sorry you can only get a companion ticket in Upper Class if you buy a 'J' class,'D' class is not a valid option. Please take a look at FC terms & Conditions Virgin Atlantic companion ticket.when you purchase a qualifying full adult fare (J, W, S, Y, B, L, M*)

I stand corrected, thanks for that I really had thought a D was valid ...

I think D used to be valid but got changed last year.

Companion tickets are very limited, as discussed elsewhere. They seem to only really be useful for business travellers whose company's will book full-fare routinely (perhaps due to not stopping Saturday nights, needing flexible/refundable tickets, and/or booking late, meaning Z or advances fares are not options for them). Some routes can be worthwhile, but it often seems marginal , especially during a sale when it's usually cheaper to pay for two of the cheapest seats.

I've used companion tickets occasionally but only in the circumstances above - and you also have to find a G or hope Flying Club/ticketing will release one if it's 3-7 days before flight.

They seem to be so limited that it's not really worth offering them - they must cause a lot of confusion and frustration to 99% of people who get excited initially when they find they have one.

As others have said they frequently have use in PE and I've even used one to save a big sum in coach to JNB once.
