Hello all,

I'm very new to Virgin Travellers Club and V-Flyer so hope someone can help me out.

I've recently taken a job which will involve at least 10 transatlantic flights per year and have selected Virgin to travel with.

Recently I flew to New York for a personal trip and also flew with Virgin but I'm very confused as to how they calculate mileage earnt for trips!?

Granted, I flew EC on both the outward and inward trips but on my account my return flight is described as 'Discounted Economy Class' and only 50% of the miles have been awarded. Please help to explain how miles are earnt and calculated.

Also, I've tried to contact Flying Club Customer Service with the same request with no joy at all!!?? Is this to be expected??

Not sure if I'm doing the right thing by joining the Virgin loyalty club - does anyone have any other experience with BA or American Airlines??

Many thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to V-Flyer.

Mileage earned is now linked to the fare code you are booked in, rather than just the class of travel. The current mileage earning levels are:

quote:
Travelling in: % of base flown miles you will earn:
Economy Lowest (X,V,N):50%
Economy (Y,B,L,M,Q):100%
Premium Economy (K,H):125%
Premium Economy (W,S):150%
Upper Class (R,Z):150%
Upper Class (J,D):200%

Reward flights and Miles Plus Money fares inclusive of classes G, I, U, T, E or O do not qualify for miles or tier points, please check for any restrictions at the time of booking.

More information about fare codes, can be found in the 'fare codes' section of V-Flyer, which is on the right hand side menu.
You earn extra miles for being a Silver or Gold FC member also.

It doesn't cost anything to join FC, so there is no harm in doing so.

Yes, no harm in joining FC, and if you do so, you can claim miles and tier points for flights in the last 6 months.

Bear in mind, if the company is paying, it might not be Flying Club, it will be Flying Co. Meaning, your company gets the miles, not you.

Darren - I'm not sure thats right - my account is associated with a Flying Co account, and I get miles exactly as expected - additionally the company gets some as well.

FlyingCo miles are only credited (I think) on full fare codes.

If you join FC with that the flights once you earn enough tier points you will get bonus milage as follows too:

Silver: 25%
Gold: 50%

Thankyou all for your messages. They have gone some way to answering my questions.

Basically what has happened is that I booked 2 economy tickets for both legs of my trip to NYC recently and on my fling club account the outward flight is detailed as 'Economy Class' providing 100% of the miles earnt but on the return flight, it is detailed as 'Discounted Economy Class' and only 50% of the miles were granted. Flying club customer services have simply said that this was because I was boarded with an 'X' class boarding ticket!!!??? Very helpful!!! What does that mean?
Myself and my partner were allocated different seats at the gate just prior to boarding - would this make a difference??
I'm very confused and a little bemused by the lack of support from Flying Club customer services! If someone could please help me out and explain how this has happened, that would be great!!!
I'll be booking my own flights by the way for each business trip - colleagues do the same and collect the mileage for personal use only.

An X class ticket is an economy fare code but as it is classed as a discounted economy fare you only earn 50% of miles flown. Quite often when you buy a flight online the outbound and inbound flights might be booked in to different fare codes depending on availabilty. So if your outbound was a Q fare and inbound X fare you would earn different miles for each flight.

The fact you didn't sit next to each other will make no difference at all. Quite often the a seat in economy can be sold for 300 or for 1000, you get the same seat, same service, it is just the fare code and it's restrictions that determine the price, not the actual seat you sit in. Fare codes and rules do get very complicated, so just try and look at your fare code in future as this will determine how many miles you earn.

Not always the case then your travel company books them for you as in this case. E.G. It often can work out cheaper to book a J than a Z available via Virgin website but you may not earn files for the J just tier points.

It is very complicated and much depends on the deal done with VA.

I am pretty sure than N, X, and Q are the discounted codes, and earn 50% of the miles and cannot be upgraded. N is usually the cheapest and I don't think can be have any changes. I cant tell the difference between X and Q apart from the price.

Y, M and L will earn full miles and can be upgraded, with miles. Only Y is a redundable fare, although changes can be made to L and M, just like they can be to X and Q......

god knows why so many codes give exactly the same options......

Only Y,B & L fares can be upgraded with miles. M fares are not eligible to upgrade with miles.
