Hi

I am booked on a flight to Vegas in Feb and the fare code is 'N' (Expedia). The flight+Hotel combo was booked by someone else (stag do).

I wanted to fly PE and enquired with Virgin regarding me paying to upgrade and was told that you cant change an N fare.

I cant be the only one that thinks this is not good business sense, you have a customer who wants to pay but you say no?

I understand I cant change dates/cancel in line with the T&Cs but I had thought (rightly or wrongly) that paying for an upgrade might be allowed.

As always, your comments are be appreciated.

Thanks

MT

My flight to Orlando in January is a 'N' Fare and I've got the option of paying to upgrade to PE both ways (manage my booking bit on their website)

N fares are usually upgradable, you just need to pay the extra usually. I would maybe try calling Virgin again and speaking to someone different, quite often you get a different answer. The other possibility is that there aren't any PE seats available which is maybe why they are saying you can't upgrade.

I'm sure I've upgraded from an 'N' ticket (with VH) before with the sequence being (a) pay to change to upgradeable class then (b) pay for upgrade.

Try looking at your booking on the VS website - this should offer you a upgrade fare if there are seat available and also this maybe cheaper than doing it over the phone. If this isn't available (LAS is a popular route), then there is always the on the day upgrade to PE at the airport (or purchasing the extra legroom Economy seats) - these options are both available at twilight check-in I believe.

I doubt you'll see an upgrade option in your booking as you only get that option when you book direct with VS.

I think, as your booked though Expedia, they will be the only ones that can process your upgrade.

Agents bookings are built differently to direct bookings. It's the same with VH bookings. You have to perform flight upgrades via VH and not VS. VS can't do anything now with agent bookings. Everything has to be done via the agent.

I'm not even sure if VS can process cash upgrades with agent bookings on the day of departure now. You would need to check.

The upgrade options dont show on the Virgn my booking page if booked through Expedia, or a third party site. You either call Expedia and ask for an upgrade price, if any available, or try at check in desk on day of flight.
