Suggestion for Netbook

I have no idea which Netbook to choose for my two daughters for Christmas[:I] They both have a Dell full size laptop at the moment, but want something more portable. They require them for course work, surfing and general use. I'd prefer not to pay more than 250 each.

Any information to help me make the right decision would be appreciated.[^]

They both want a SatNav as well, so any suggestions for those would be good. 60 - 120 range. Only required for UK.

Samsung NC10 had rave reviews as a netbook and, as it is started to be superseded by newer models is at competitive prices.

Acer do a strong range as well

Can't help you on the satnav, I'm afraid.

Amazon have the Samsung N130 10.1' Netbook for 229.99. And it is in PINK

Oh this is good - I want to buy one for my nephew and one for my nieve for part of their Christmas so suggestions please (14yo neice and 12 yo nepehw - both IT obsessed and fly a heck of a lot (so I guess I could ask them but ney))

HWVlover suggestion above may well work for Neice (TY), now for Edward ....

The Samsung NC10 appears to be the netbook with the most positive reviews, whatever site you go on. Apparently you just have to make sure you are buying the 6 cell and not the 3 cell. However having said that the 3 cell still has rave reviews. I had millions (well not exactly)of points on Nectar and got them both a Garmin SatNav each. e-buyer is a good site to compare laptops HG.

Of course I'll be your mum Slipperman, I seem to have adopted most of my three childrens friends, they nearly all call me mum, so one more wouldn't be an issue.[:D]

There are definitely some competitively priced netbooks out there at the moment. Good advice on the battery life. Definitely make sure you order model numbers with the high powered batteries.

I would like to get mine from John Lewis for various reasons - I see they do a good comparison chart inc battery life. Just don't know what is a good model and what is not [:?]

Netbooks tend to come with roughly the same spec. The norm woill have a 10inch screen with resolution of 1024 x 600 and will have 1 Gb of memory and a 1.6Ghz processor.

The things differentiating are

battery life - look for at least 6 hours. The new Samsung NC140 has a whopping 10 hours (at a price)

Disk space - 160 GB and above is good.

Operating system - Newer netbooks are starting have windows 7 on them. If your nephew and niece are into IT they might like that. Otherwise netbooks come with XP - avoid anything with Vista!

Brand wise

Samsung consistently get good reviews. Acer usually do well (my little acer has done me fine), MSI not bad.

Acer AspireOne works well for me. Whatever you choice in the end, just remember what it's main function is; email/web on the move. Don't expect it to be able to do what a full-sized laptop can.

Your joking right ? If you take the back off your mac guess what, it's a PC, Motorola just couldn't keep up with the Intel/AMD chips, so please, let's not start the APPLE builds better computers, they don't, they build PC's that run Apple software.

And on that note, I like to play with stuff and trying to get an OS to run on something it wasn't designed for is kind of fun (massive nerd I know) but anyways, it turns out the Dell netbooks seem to have the most success with this.
