BA038 ATC Crash Tapes

This is generating a bit of interest over on a.net and I thought might be of interest to some on here. This is link to the video.

What I find amazing is the professionalism of all involved. The ATC controller remained so calm throughout. When you listen to ATC tapes from other airports, it is quite shocking at how unprofessional they are. Interesting to note that in the mayday call the pilot, quite forgivably, gave the wrong flight number and gave the order to evacuate over ATC by mistake. Amazed at the speed in which the fire services were on the scene and the way in which everything switched runways so quickly.

Thank you for that link, as is being said on A'Net, great job by the controller, the thing that got me was how quickly it all happened, from the mayday to the crash.

Yes it was remarkable how calm everyone seemed faced with a plane crash sitting at the end of the runway. well done to all involved especially atc that organised the emergency services so quickly not to mention the skills of the pilot who saved lives.

If you look at the video, it is amazing how quickly Fire 2 arrives on the taxiway to 27L. I am guessing it must have been down by the VS mx hangars/the fire test aircraft at the time. They have a visual on the aircraft within about 45 seconds.

Having worked with ATCOs and having seen them under pressure, I do not find it amazing at all!
This is exactly what I would expect.
They frequently work under great pressure and train constantly for any type of incident.

Good that they are receiving recognition though these guys would see nothing unusual at all in the way in which they responded in this incident - that is just the job they have to do.

Next time I'm thinking I have a stressful job, I'll bear this in mind.

Is that a mistake? Wouldn't ATC need to have some idea of what was happening in the aircraft in order to pass the information on to the emergency crews?

It does sound like a mistake (totally understandable though), the pilot says (interrupting an ATC communication to the following aircraft):

The immediate response from ATC is:

The ATC controller then proceeds to sort out the Quatar aircraft to tell it to go around.

I'm very impressed by the speed of response, and by the end of the video the number of emergency vehicles that have arrived or are seconds away [y]

The whole thing is quite impressive. One thing from the video which is noticable is the developing swarm of vehicles (the small, 'untagged' blobs) heading to the crash landing on the Surface Movement Radar, and the speed at which they get moving.

Fire engines, ambulances, all moving within seconds of the situation beginning.

That wouldn't be the same NATS who are 49% owned by you and me would it, the UK taxpayer? The same ones who are letting their lawyers trouser gazillions of taxpayer investment on silly meaningless Internet injunctions?
