24 before then 20 hours before flying. The message sorry you can't check in online. My wife the same. Both on different references since on different fare buckets and the only way Amex could ticket them.

Phoned Virgin's Australia number. Don't know why you can't. Jolly good start to a trip [n].

If I fly to Sydney tomorrow and get my seat reallocated or better still my wife and I split I will probably be appearing on Google news headlines as the rampaging Pom who beat several people to death with a Swiss Army rollaboard [:p]

How many legs on your bookings? VS don't seem to be able to allow OLCI if you have more than 1-2..if your interconnect flights on the same booking, this will be why. We had same problem last month.

Only VS SYD-HKG-LHR as far as they are concerned. I have other bookings with DJ and BA but they are not linked. OLCI was fine 2 months ago on the same sectors. Thats why I'm confused and a little suspicious of impending doom.

I hope you don't get split ... but, I see you are in Upper and EF shows Upper as full whereas seats in PE and more in Y. There may be some juggling going on, and I suggest you check in early in case you have had your seats reassigned to see if there's anything you can do. Also, onboard often people can be very flexible when asked nicely if they wouldn't mind swapping and are travelling singly (if the worst comes to the worst).

Tip for next time should you have to bookings is to call VS and have them linked. This will help prevent you being split.

I can never check in online or at one of the terminals when I travel with my son, as we both share the same first Initial.
I have to use a check in agent.

Could this be the cause ?

On arrival at syd it turns out check in decided to split my wife and I up over both sectors with different seat numbers in different parts of the cabin. None of which were our seats. The check in agent was helpful but as perplexed as we. Eventually after seeking supervisor assistance it seems for some reason our original seats had been blocked on the first sector for some unknown reason.

A check was made with engineering to ensure the seats were fine and then reallocated. It just meant 20 mins of standing around at check in which I must confess was not my idea of fun. Oh well. At least we eventually got there. Hoping the same thing doesn't happen on the return. ....

Hi All,

Sorry if this is a silly question, but what are the advantages of checking in online instead of using the check in agent at the airport? Just curious. Assuming travelling in one of the premium cabins, i.e. Upper Class and Premium Economy.

Also when you check in online, where to do place the luggage that you want to check in at the airport? How do you obtain the boarding passes?
I logged into my booking (manage my booking) on the VS website and I have pre selected my seats and also my wifes months ago, if I use the check in agent does this mean it's a higher chance I will lose the seats vs if I checked in online 24 hours before?

Cheers,
K.

I can understand if you are travelling in J but Premium Economy or Economy are both economy prodects rather Premium in the true sense of the word (in my world) so OLCI in any economy cabin would give you a better chance of getting the seat you want. That being so I do find it hard to understand why one would do it in J as you suggest - I certainly dont nor ever have/would.

Thanks HG. In PE and Economy , do you mean VS can just remove your advanced seat allocation on their website if you don't use OLCI compared to UC?

Cheers,
K.

The advantage of doing OLCI is the better choice of seats that are opened up (especially if you do it when it first opens). only 60% of seats are 'requestable' beforehand.

Doing OLCI gives you a better chance of having any pre-selected seats (if you have them) being allocated to you (there is never a guarentee). It also, if the flight is over sold, means you are less likely to be involuntarily bumped off the flight.

Even though you have done OLCI you can do 'normal' check-in (if you want) to see about exit row seats or ask about upgrades. So you might have your eye on getting the exit row but can choose your next best option of seats at OLCI in case you dont get the exit row rather than having to take pot luck.

If you have done OLCI you go to the 'bag drop' desks where you will be given your boarding pass.

I hope this makes sense !

VS make it quite clear they can change your advanced seat allocation for operational reasons and indeed we stress here on V-Flyer that any pre-allocations are merely requests and not set in stone.

In addition VS states on its website that you must check in not later than 13 hours before the flight to have that request honoured

Hi,

Thanks. So the moral of the story is to check in online? :) no matter what cabin you are flying in?

Just a question, I have already pre-selected the seats for my PE flight SYD-HKG. Is it common to find that 24 hours before when OLCI opens that I find my assignment gone? Or this is not a common thing to happen?

Yes, it can happen. Sometimes it's for an aircraft change even when they are replacing like with like! [:0]

Yep. Just to echo what T-Bear said, we were told by a VS Check In Agent that OLCI reduces your chances of being bumped off the flight or bumped down a class (if PE or UC) on an oversold flight.

Does anyone here use OLCI even when flying Upper Class or very rarely you use it?

Always! There's something exciting about doing OLCI 24 hours before the flight and it always enhances my sense of anticipation! Besides, I'm childish enough (in spite of my ever advancing years) to be excited if I manage to score SEQ 1!! [:D]

Thanks for the responses :) I didin't realise that there were so many people using OLCI! As I always see the queue on the check in desks quite long!!! :)

Do you guys/girls after OLCI drop your bag off at the online check in area or do you go to the actual check in desks?
#731812 by honey lamb

I usually go to the UC desk but either the bag drop or the check-in desks are acceptable

I still go to the desk as I never print off my boarding card. I'd much rather have a 'proper' purple one than a scrappy piece of paper [:D].

Either to the desk or up the ramp ... I OLCI as a kind of check that the flight is happening and there's nothing untoward to prepare. I never print a BP and always see a human being.
