Seattle Hotels

Ok, so I have quite some time before I go, but I like to have a backup hotel booking in place, so has anyone got any good hotel recommendations for Seattle? Not there for long, so be good to be near where it all happens. Thanks!

(I also plan a Boeing tour, which I hope will be good fun!)

The Westin or the W get my vote. Both are in easy walking of Union square/Pike Street and a little walk to the seafront and Pike Place market. Is there a side of Seattle that you'd rather be closer to?

Thanks. I was just pondering the Westin, and also the Sheraton. As for where, I have no idea, near the shops and places to be (no help I know!)

I've stayed at http://www.hotel1000seattle.com/index.php the rooms we're very nice as was the bar/restaurant.
The rest of the facilities weren't brilliant IMO so if all you want is a nice room and bar (and pleasant staff) then I couldn't knock it.
I didn't like Seattle myself, couldn't wait to get out of there.

I have looked at Hotel 1000, though I can't book for next Nov yet, but may revisit it soon. It does look very nice, if a little pricey. Not sure if I'll like it or San Fran, but fancied somewhere different this trip, and thought I should use up some miles.

The first time I stayed in Seattle Priceline gave me the West Coast Vance. Avoid it at all cost!! It was branded as a 3* but the 2* (according to Priceline) Sixth Avenue hotel was far superior. We ended up having breakfast there

A few thoughts:

* The Hyatt at Olive 8 just opened...looks lovely. I had Thanksgiving dinner at their restaurant and it was quite good.

* The Fairmont has the largest rooms in town...not a design-forward place, much more grand hotel

* The Four Seasons is truly lovely. Also new. Ask for a water-view room.

* The Sheraton, Westin, W, and Monaco are all near-in, as are the Hotel Max, Hotel 1000, and others. The Sheraton just opened a new tower...

If you see a few choices and prices and need to discuss in greater detail, just private message me and I'll be happy to discuss at greater length. For me, the hotel is a huge aspect of my travel so I will be happy to help you make the right choice!

Unfortunately I truly was 'sleepless in Seattle' too which was a shame as I really would rather have spent the trip asleep in bed than going round that place, I just found it really dull and unexciting.

Locutus, San Fran knocks Seatle for six IMO but you're doing the right thing. You've got to go to these places, it's the only way you can form a true opinion for yourself.

I am looking to visit Seattle at this time next year.

We are also considering the sleeper train between LA and Seattle, does anyone have any opinions?

The train is a lovely and fun way to see the coast...BUT:

* The train is ALWAYS woefully late...US passenger rail must defer to freight rail every time, leading to complete scheduling cock-ups
* The train is somewhat expensive...particularly when you book a sleeping compartment. I strongly suggest booking a bedroom with a shower, as train travel can get stinky over a several day period!

All that said, I would do the journey in a heartbeat. It's a great way to see the country.

I love the Fairmont Olympic, it used to be the Four Season and a lot of the staff are left over from that period.The fantastic bar men have been there for 20 years plus.Amex FHR and Virtuoso have good rates and amenities here.A bit of Trivia a couple of scenes from Disclosure were filmed in the fantastic lobby.

Hey, I had drinks there last night! I've always felt the lobby was a bit washed-out, colourwise. It could do with something to make that gorgeous wood pop a bit more. As it is, it seems to kind of blend into the walls and carpet. As I noted above, this hotel has the largest basic rooms in the city.

We have done a similar journey in China which we enjoyed and the Amtrak rooms with the shower look much better. I am English, so train delays are part of normal rail travel aren't they!!!

Will we need a car in Seattle? Our plan is to enjoy the city and visit Boeing.

Capitol! I hope you have a wonderful time.

I would most certainly recommend a motorcar for your visit. Boeing is a 30 minute drive north of downtown (to the Everett factory) or 15 minutes south (to Boeing Field, the Museum of Flight, etc). Remember it can rain here so walking places too distant is a drag and on top of it our mass transit is crap (no tube, light rail that is not yet covering the city, mostly just shite buses, etc).
