Also not allowed mobiles / laptops or any other electrical device!
How absolutely fantastic!
I don't have a clue what goes through the minds of the people that makes these simply ridiculous rules...
Of course, I don't think anyone would disagree that secondary security checks would increase security and safety effectiveness and be beneficial in the long run, but blocking the IFE off? Ridiculous.
I can safely say that unless it is a night flight most people are looking out the window most of the time and suprisingly enough, there are landmarks! People have been educated in Geography and its easy enough to recognise certain places simply based on time. How will they stop this? No chance.
Will there be alternative IFE handed out during the flight? Will they provide power leads to anyone that requests one? Sadly, the answer is almost a certain No but I feel some must question the effectiveness of certain measures.
As for the seatbelt signs on rule, madness. If there has ever been an indicator that you are over US ground, this would be it. If a terrorist wants to do something of that nature, they will manage it. Do they expect crew to be checking underneath EVERYONES seat -60? Why not take it out prior to the seatbelt sign coming on and keep it stashed somewhere? Easy to do, again, another ridiculous rule that causes tons of inconvenience.
Obviously it isn't just VS either, which means a sad day for all passengers, I do hope someone gets the priorities straight sooner rather than later.

So a flight full of wet seats and full nappies, oh how can Virgin for example sell that?
Please remember, it's not just VS, it's all airlines flying to the US, but yes you are correct on all counts.
Scrooge, yes I know its going to be all airlines, but the holiday flights are going to be the worst for lots of children, drinks and no toilets, so Virgin, BA to an extent and FCA are going to be hit hard by this

Strike or no stike, this will make life for BA, not to mention all the other airlines, very difficult indeed.
Why don't they go the full hog and ban airlines from carrying passengers? Would make sure there was no risk then,

The folk in the US who create these ridiculous rules have just gone potty, this guy was apparently on a no fly list for two years, but they give him a visa! Then, he's in his seat but suddenly it's no moving around, no IFE, no pillow, no peeing in the last hour, no working on your laptop. Heavens above, the Americans have gone loopy!
There's a plane at JFK, to fly you back from far away
all those dark and frantic transatlantic miles

New measures:
Additional hands on security screening at the gate
PAX must remain seated for the last hour of the flight
No access to carry on luggage for the last hour of flight
No personal effects in the posession for the last hour of flight including bags or airline pillows blankets etc.
No internet.
No satphone calls.
No P/A announcements from the flight deck about where the aircraft happens to be flying while in US airspace.
No moving map displays
Apart from the increased screening at the gate, is any of the rest of these measure going to stop someone from doing what this guy did at any other time in the flight bar the last hour?[?]
Take his flight from ams, if he had managed to bring the plane down in the first hour, would it not have crashed somewhere in the UK[?]
This does not seem to have been thought through at all

From the Reuters website:
quote: ABC said the explosive device consisted of a six-inch packet of powder and a syringe with a liquid, which were sewn into the man's underwear so they would be near his testicles and unlikely to be detected.
They'll be searching our underwear next [:0] Or else told to fly commando!
And to think we railed against the new machines that can do a full body x-ray scan! The sooner they are implemented world-wide, the sooner this other nonsense can stop!

didn't the chap who blew up the plane in 'Airport' use a map printed in the back of the in flight magazine and his watch to work out where he should set it off?
Me thinks this is a case of 'we must do something. this is something. we will do it' without any thoughts of the ptacticalities e.g. pax needing the loo etc
They will calm down in a week or two once they realise they made a major error in letting the chap get on the plane in the first place and after a few congressmen and senators start complaining abit being held up themselves.
Am all for security but it must be proportionate

Huzzah for International Jet-setting !
Just arrived at LAX on VS23, VA have implemented all of the measures listed above. The gate checks are very detailed (phone batteries removed) and hence a two hour delay. There was very limited IFE, one film at a time shown on all screens, no ability to change or turn off the screen. No flight deck announcements on expected arrival times. One hour to landing and the full cabin lockdown, nothing on anyones laps, cabin crew checking. Lots of appoligies. Its day one but no complaining PAX on this flight!

I feel we all have to resign ourselves to these new measures for the time being[n] Inevitably, it will lead to the the sort of scrutiny associated with flying with El Al i.e. proper screening before boarding the aircraft

Gotta say, this is hardly making me yearn to travel to the US anymore.
Can anyone explain what the point of this one hour before landing business is? All this change achieves is to make a determined unbalanced pax set their device off earlier in the flight. The only thing I can see it achieving is to stop a co-ordinated attack at the same time. But, ahem, hasn't the horse already bolted?
Cheers, Howard

Did you happen to notice what pax with iPhones where having to do? As you can't remove iPhone batteries.
Just gearing up for all this ready to fly to SFO on Wednesday.

We are making our 7th trip to the USA on Friday but you know what, I just can't be bothered with the crap anymore. This is the proverbial nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned. We love holidaying in the states but thats it, we are through with the place, it's a great country to visit........ but not that great. Well done the US authorities, I rather suspect you have just lost quite a few dollars from the US coffer jar[n][V]

So, apart from making us all fly naked or banning all PAX from flights what would be a 'sensible' reaction to this incident? Being a very infrequent flier (every other year) I am only too pleased to partake in any circus act they ask of me.(apart from keeping my legs crossed for an hour that is, old ladies bladder syndrom[:I])
Just to clear a couple of things up.
The IFE was shut down because of the seat to seat messaging and the map, there was a limited bypass for later flights yesterday and fingers crossed those features should be disabled with in the next couple of days.
The messaging I can actually understand, the map part, not so much, you really only need to look out a window to kind of figure out where your at, water not US, land US.

See, I don't understand the messaging at all. Do they really think that switching off an electronic seat-to-seat messaging system will thwart terrorists? Do they really think that such people will not have planned, practised & coordinated every element of their plan and would have their own signalling system or timed, coordinated plan? Same goes for the map really, its not difficult to find out the average flight time and routings to a destination and make an intelligent guesstimate as to when or where you are.
These measures make us look like a laughing stock to those who really wish to bring harm. I certaintly want our airways to be safe and to never, ever see another 9/11 but these changes are nonsensical and I would really rather not go to the US while they are in place - bringing about another kind of downfall that is exactly what some of these terrorists are hoping for.
Thanks,
Sarah

We thought long and hard last night about our trip today, in the end decided to go. Maybe this could be our last trip to the USA for a long time. When these pointless measures make flying a real pain it's time to go elsewhere.Anyhow bolly is going down fine looking like 1hours delay at the moment.
Try being cabin crew on these flights! Please remember its no fun for us either. We don't want to tell you that you cannot leave your seat and use the restroom. I don't want to pry the laptop from the businessman, and I certainly don't want to stand and be yelled at for 10 minutes. It's ridiculous that people feel that they need to yell at the cabin crew about how ridiculous these new rules are. We don't like them any more than anyone else. We DO have to implement them though, or it's our jobs on the line. Also, from VS's point of view, if they did NOT implement these silly measures and something did happen there would be an outcry. 'Virgin ignores safety recommendations' and so on.

I don't think anyone on here is blaming Cabin Crew, or even VS, for the situation. The airline and BAA are clearly just doing as they have been instructed. I am sure most staff who have to implement the daft rules can see that they aren't going to prevent any future atrocities, and are just annoying the travelling public.
You say 'It's ridiculous that people feel that they need to yell at the cabin crew about how ridiculous these new rules are.'
Has there been much anger directed at crew? The posts from crobinson99 indicated an acceptance by passengers.

I'm sure most, if not all people on here don't blame you guys (or VS for that matter)
I just wish VS would provide a bit more information on their website as there's no mention of what to currently do with mobile phones or lap-tops on the VS website. Are they allowed in hand-luggage and if so can they be used during the flight?
It's the same old story isn't it. When pax don't have the information they need, they get frustrated and they then start taking it out on other people & front line staff.
How difficult is it to upload simple, clear and concise info about what you currently can and cannot carry on-board with you?

Easy - provided Virgin have been told exactly what the rule are. [:?]
I would like to know who has come up with this reaction. The phrase knee jerk has been used many, many times. I would like to think that once people get back to work on Tuesday, there will be a more considered sensible policy put in place.
We can hope, can't we? [}:)]

I'm still a bit confused to why these measures are only in place for the US? Which leads me to think that as others have said is a bit OTT.
I was under the impression that the Terrorists disliked us (the British) as much as the Americans.
If this is such a major threat then this should be impossed on both sides of the Atlantic. The way I see it is that this Abdulmutallab guy could quite easily taken a flight to London instead of Detroit.

I don't know the ins and outs of all these new rules but if it makes it safer fair enough.
I do think however that this terrorist was abit stupid, I mean if your going to blow up a plane, surely you'd do it up at 35000ft where some real damage could be done? not that I want to give any hints&tips!!

Quick question for virgin crew/staff.
What happens if someone has a medical condition (previously advised to special assistance and also carrying a dr's note) and needs to have their medication on themselves at all times, not stowed away in their hand luggage which they can't access.
Thanks
