I have a 2 hour connection from Houston to Dallas on the 10th Jan. I hope things are a little better with the internal flights in the US, otherwise I'll miss my connection.

I expect things will settle down to a more normal level at some point in the future, it's just a question of how long we have to put up with this extra level of screening again.

Resources would be better deployed into examining the failures in the Watch list and why this did n't trigger an appropriate check on the individual.

At least non-US flight airport security remains much the same as before.

Just gone though MAN T3 for my domestic flight down to LHR. Nothing out of the ordinary with security and was though in under 2 minutes. MAN T3 security is always a breeze now it's been moved.

Lap-tops still had to be taken out of bags, belts off etc etc. Shoes left on though!

BMI been fantastic so far as they have even put on on a slightly earlier flight. No surprise really, considering how many BMI flights there now are between MAN>LHR. There's 3 BD flights to LHR within the space of 30 mins plus I have the BD lounge all to myself [:w]

I just went through this whole thread, but don't think I saw any views or experience on flights OUT from the US back to LHR from JFK. I assume that on the ground security will take longer but any changes in-flight (in terms of use of electronics, V-Port, etc.)

Also, anyone find that they were able to still take their iPhone/iPod Touch on board?

Flights out of the USA have no extra precautions. The entertainment is working normally except for the skymap and the in seat messaging. The normal procedure regarding electronics applies - must be turned off for taxi, take-off and landing and I saw several iPhones and iPods onboard the other day.

Just popped over to VS check-in at LHR and I was informed that the normal baggage rules are now in place for US flights (so that's the usual no liquids, gels etc but electronic goods including iPhones and lap-tops etc. are now OK to carry on board with you)

There's still the 1 carry-on bag rule in place though for all cabins.

Wonder when Janet Neapolitano (sic) will resign for her brilliant statement saying everything worked as it should. Oh that's right, she works for the government, so never.

It's the same liquids rule as before - ie nothing over 100ml and containers must fit into the plastic bag.

I asked my people at virgin today about the i-phone and laptop situation. They clearly told me that there is NO need to check these in to hand luggage, and until further notice one hour before landing no items would be available for use.

Since most flights prepare for landing around 45 mins out I dont really see this too much hassle to be honest

Thats is exactly what mitchja had posted above - the rules have been relaxed.

As for the 1hr but - I have NEVER been on a flght where I was sat for more than 20 mins.

...and that's one of the big rubs here. The US authorities have put these rules in place using an assumption that there is no 'enemy within' - i.e. no danger from people already in the US.

To quote Michael Moore in Farenheit 9/11 - 'The biggest danger to Americans is... other Americans'.

The threat reduction afforded by the current additional measures in place seems to be disproportionate to the disruption, increased costs to airlines, and resultant damage to business and tourism.

Latest news now that CNN finally have their heads out of their asses. It's only taken a couple of days for credible eye witnesses to actually be interviewed (compare and contrast with celebrity news stories). Couple waiting to baord saw bomber with sharply dressed Indian man who talked the guy onto the plane without a passport (a little too much wacky backy in Amsterdam methinks - puts you in mind of the two cops on Harry Enfield). Then some dude videotaped the whole thing, the entire flight (apparently the use of devices with an on / off button was approved in his case) and the explosion. He's subsequently disappeared but is being sought! WTF?

Indeed - it was only a couple of nights ago Sarah and I watched a couple of 9/11 dcoumentaries - the magnitude of failings and stupidity on the part of America is breathtaking. What's that phrase again about horse and bolted....

Some indications that tighter carry-on regulations are on their way.
quote:
All U.S.-bound guests are also advised that they cannot bring any carry-on baggage, with the following exceptions:

Small purses, diaper bags
Cameras
Coats
Laptop computers
Crutches, canes and walkers
Containers with life-sustaining items
Medication or medical devices
Musical instruments

Wheeled bags are prohibited and existing restrictions for liquids, aerosols and gels are still in effect.

The above is just a media report based on YVR announcement so reliability is not guaranteed although much of the last update did come out of Canada.

Is that those Crazee Canucks being cautious or a TSA directive?

I don't understand why wheely bags aren't allowed, I mean it stops hand luggage problems for crew especially as most people seem to fill them with utter junk probably including the kitchen sink for a whole of maybe 8-10 hours but it just seems rather OTT to me!
