is it ok to do a new application, even though I've updated my address details, so I can essentially extend the date of my ESTA???

There is nothing to stop you but you will soon hit the wall of your passport expiry date as the ESTA is for two years or until your passport expires if this is less than 2 years.

My current ESTA is only for 1 year 11 months because of my expiry date.

But I guess that making multiple repeat applications will soon start to flag in their system.

Good point - probably best to avoid that.

Being a disorganised chap, I never can find my old ESTA when I next fly, so I have applied multiple times, and so far I've not ended up with the perspex cell hearing the rubber glove snap behind me...

I actually found just yesterday a cache of old ESTA printouts while updating it for my flight this week (I know, I know, I did read the thread but I always reckon on belt-and-braces with US Immigration), so I logged onto the DHS website to see if I could update them rather than create a new one. Turns out they were all expired, except the last one, so I presume that creating a new one automatically revokes any old one.

I know that saying this now with such blithe confidence is going to see me in the holding tank at JFK on Wednesday...so if I don't post for a few weeks, can someone call the British Embassy?
