And booking a Z outbound, i'd then be entitled to a CDC?

Sorry, my fingers and brain aren't working together today.

I menat a R.

And i'd be entitled to a CDC going out only, as you don't get them with upgrades, so the return I wouldn't get it.

Yes, providing you fall in to the CDC limits as detailed on this page of the VS site. So basically you need to live within 75miles of LHR. Although it will go further but at a cost to you.

You should be fine then if you decide to book a R fare. Obviously there will be a difference in cost between a Z and a R fare, which when you work it out might end up being a lot just to get the CDC one way.

It's about 150 - 200 but R is the lowest fare that I can book for the date I want. Plus, I'd only have to spend 50 getting a train, or to park, so I wouldn;t mind the full experience. Do you get a transfer when you get to your destination?

Yes, you would when you landed in SYD. Obviously you would have to make your own way back to the airport and back home when you landed at LHR. Although, as you would be on a G, you could actually spend 17,500miles for a transfer home.

Putting it into google maps again, there are 3 routes it suggests, one is 40km, the next is 53km and the other is 57.7 kn so that's ok too ;)
