San Diego

Looking at spending a few nights in San Diego after Bay To Breakers this May before moving on to Palm Springs. We know the latter well but not the former, any recommendations for 4/5 star hotels? The US Grant has caught my eye?

The Del at Coronado is my favourite ! But failing that the Hyatt is very nice and well placed.

DO NOT stay at the US Grant, it is a total piece of s**t hotel, way over priced for what it is.

As HG say the Del Coronado is nice, also on the list of nice hotels I have stayed at in San Diego

The Omni
The Marriot Gaslamp
The W
The Manchester Grand Hyatt

Out of those I would probably say the Omni gets my vote, with the Manchester Grand a close second.

One thing to note, if you have a car, the parking costs at these hotels makes SFO look like a bargin, off the top of my head all of the above charge $20+ a night for self parking and $40+ for valet parking.

James, the Del Coronado is a classic, known simply as 'the Del'. It is on the island of Coronado, not in San Diego proper. Its location is adjacent to a variety of shops and restaurants and, of course, the ocean.

You'll need a rental car whether or not you stay in SD or on Coronado as the city itself is spread out.

Sand Diego is a fantastic place and would go back at the drop of a hat

Actually I have never been that impressed with Four Seasons, but with that said, San Diego is an expensive hotel town with many of them really not justifying their price tags.

Take a look at the Omni, see what rates your getting for the dates you need.

Marriott Gaslamp used to be a good party hotel with the rooftop bar, IIRC, and I think you get a view of the baseball ground and the games which adds to the color ... better than going to the game itself if you ask me.

Its' tough to stay in a nice hotel in La Jolla for anything less than 200 bucks, and that's 20 minutes north, SD itself is way expensive. I go for work and to visit friends a good deal, but never fell in love enough with the place to consider a move ....

It's a nice place and a good choice, the only issue being that it is a little bit of a drive to get to Downtown San Diego, just something to keep in mind.

Are any of the Hilton's (or associated brands) any good? Price would not be an issue as I've got a couple of quarter three certificates to use as well as a shed load of points. Diamond member if it makes any difference (so a good chance of space available upgrade).


I'm thinking about a drive down when we're in Laguna this April with perhaps just one overnight.

Apart from an Embassy Suites downtown I am not aware of any in any prominent areas. Some of my colleagues have stayed in that Embassy suites and found it noisey (from road traffic) and not one of thier best properties.

Being by the coast as Sand Diego is I would only stay right next to it - if not The Del (as I have posted above) it would be the Hyatt or Marriott for me. The bar at the top of the Hyatt is faboulous for watching the sunset [y]

The three I was looking at are the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, the Hilton San Diego Bay front, and then 6 miles out the Hilton San Diego Resport and Spa. (I generally wouldn't touch an
Embassy Suites with a barge pole). Apart from the Gaslamp property (which looks adjacent to the Amtrack and also might be a bit noisy) I don't know anything about the location of the other two.

No dont touch the Gas Lamp one and for similar reasons be careful where your room is in the Bay Front as the noise from hooting trains goes on all night (and is right behind this hotel too). Not stayed there but looks OK.
