First of all I just want to say how overwhelmed I am by all of the messages. I am so grateful for all of your kind words, thoughts and prayers. I very much believe in the powers of prayers and good thoughts and I am pleased to report that while we are still not in a great place, things have improved.

Long story short, Theo had penumonia and the bacteria causing the pneumonia went into his bloodstream. When that happened, for some reason that no one knows, it set off a rare reaction in his body which led to his kidneys shutting down. Not everyone who has the infection he has would have this reaction.

Since admission to the PICU on Saturday Theo has been stabilized. He was put onto a hemo-filtration machine that is filtering his blood (doing the work of his kidneys). He has had a few blood transfusions. He is stable and responding well to treatment.

Where we are today is a) there are positive signs the infection is clearing, b) there are positive signs the process set off in his body is slowing or stopping, and c) his lungs are clear. Those are the good things. The bad thing is that his kidneys are still not functioning. He is still sedated, on a ventilator (only b/c of sedation), and on the hemo-filtration machine. Now it is a waiting game. It is our understanding that the probability of his kidneys repairing themselves is high, but how long that could take is a wildcard. Could be days, could be weeks. So it is a long, slow road we are on, but things are looking brighter.

I do believe that things are looking brighter b/c of so many people around the world thinking about Theo. I can never thank you enough.

I will keep you updated.

Great to read a little bit of good news regarding Theo's current condition. I know first hand what it is like to have a child in hospital for months at a time and you have our full best wishes and positive thoughts. Babies are strong little critters despite their delicate appearence.
He knows you are there for him and that is the best medicine you can ever give.

I am glad to hear that things seem to be coming around, it really does amazes me how quickly babies recover from these things.

Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement. They are working - Theo is slowly recovering.

Just a quick update to say that Theo is scheduled to have minor surgery tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon to insert a tube for peritoneal dialysis, which will enable him to have his blood filtered by a less invasive measure so he can come off sedation, ventilation and gastric tube feeding. Even though it is minor surgery, all surgery carries risks so we are understandably nervous. I appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers that it all goes well.

Then it will be a waiting game to see if his kidneys will start functioning again so he won't need dialysis any more.

As always, I will keep you posted.
