Hi

I've got enough miles for 1 UC seat to the USA, but wondered what a good price for a UC return would be to Miami or New York in September?

At the moment New York is 2000 and Miami 2400!

I'm sure i've seen fares around the 1400 mark not too long ago?

Any help appreciated!

The recent sale has just ended, with prices for NYC at around the 1400 level as you say. I guess it depends on if you can wait for the next sale, which will probably by Easter/Summer or pay the current going rate on the VS site.

MIA is always more, and again, was at around 1700/1800 in the sale.

As an option, have you thought about buying either an L economy fare or S PE fare and upgrading to UC with miles, it might work out cheaper than buying one UC return and one full miles ticket.

It's very much a case of 'If you're happy paying, then go for it'. As the saying goes, the price of tickets my go up as well as down and a 2000 ticket now may rise to 3 or 4K depending on the availability of Z fares.

The Upper Class sale only finished on Tuesday so the 1400 would have been about right.

I think i'll wait until the next sale. Can't do any harm and i'm guessing if we are still in recession the UC seats may still be available! I'm also thinking BA may have another sale soon, so i'm assuming Virgin will copy?

Cost of two flexible PE or two flexible economy are more than the 1 free UC and 1 fare UC, so won't bother upgrading there.

If you've got 15k miles spare, you could go for a Miles Plus Money fare which last time I checked was under 1400. If you haven't got 15k miles spare, it's got to be cheaper to buy the miles and go for the Miles Plus Money fare?

Edited to say that's under 1400 to Miami.

Are you sure?

I have just priced up some random dates in April, and for NYC a L fare is coming in at under 600 for NYC and under 700 for MIA. Okay you will have some extra taxes to pay if you upgrade to UC, but not too much, and of course you would still have to pay taxes on the 'free' flight. Your total cost of 1 Z and 1 full G would come out at say 2300/2400 and 90k miles, whilst 2 L's up to G's would come out at say 1500/1600 plus 120k miles

Remember, you don't have to buy a fully flexible economy ticket (Y class) which the option on the main flight search gives you, an L class is fine for upgrading with miles.

Virgin are reporting a surge in group business again, indicating that demand is back so it doesn't necessarily follow that another UC sale will have the same fares...

so how do you track down price/availability of an L class ticket then, when the major online searches, including VS's own, show Y class...

some insight into this appreciated!

UK VS Website then select 'L' for the class, although you can't upgrade from an L fare with miles when starting from any US airport.
