Is it wise to get a renewed passport if say... It's been through the washing machine?
Depends on how damaged it is.
If there is any damage at all to the photo / biometric details page then I think you should get it renewed as any damage will be seen as suspicious (especially these days and with the news yesterday about fake passports)
Don't want one of those 'sorry you cant fly' moments would you (like on so many of those airline programmes)
It looks weathered so to speak. There is no real damage, two of the stamps are smudged a little now, and the pages look like they have been wet, but the cover isn't hanging off, not does the photo page look damaged.
But like you say, I don't want one of those moments!
I'm just annoyed as it was only 8 months old!

It's probably wise to start doing my own washing too, but i'll never admit that to my girlfriend!
Steady on there ! Start with just checking your pockets first !
[:D][:D][:D]
(BTW I have to do my own washing !)

Huzzah for International Jet-setting !
There was an episode of Airport where a chap was held at immigration as his passport looked fraudulent. The immigration officer noted that the passport pages looked smudged and faded which were common detectors for fraud. Turned out that it had just been through the washing machine [:D] I would get it changed, just to be sure.
Thanks,
Sarah
Thanks,

I was coming through T3 recently and at the next desk in Immigration a passenger was being given a right rollicking from the Border Control guy because of the state of his UK passport.
Sent my passport off special delivery on Monday 9th August 2010
Arrived at Newport on Tuesday 10th August 2010
Passport issued on Wednesday 11th August 2010
Text from DX delivery received on Saturday 14th August 2010
Received pasport today but that delay was due to me - could have had it Tuesday if had been organised (and reaslised what it was !)
So it essentially took a day to issue my new passport. I know I used the on-line form so probbaly they did some of the ID checks beforehand but I am still very impressed about the turn round speed and in the middle of summer too !
Now to apply for a new ESTA before they start charging

Posted our renewals on Wednesday 18 August, I will advise when we get them back. They were just standard, no express service, I did send them "Royal Mail Signed For".
Received a letter this morning from DX Secure stating passports are ready for delivery, just have to arrange convenient date. So in our case it will have taken just under two weeks from posting applications to receipt of new passports. y) Pretty good in August methinks.

Also back in time to beat the ESTA deadline and save the fee, for two years anyway!
I was remembering this thread from last year and I thought I should add my experience.
Normal renewal for my dear old passport that has had the gold from the front missing for over half it's life and has been a few places it probably regrets....
Sent by Special Delivery on Wednesday 2nd Feb so arrived on Thursday morning.
Lo and behold, it arrived this morning! A one-week and a day turnaround door to door. I was a little nervious as I'm flying at end of March but I must admit, I am impressed and relieved.

Move to the red side...
For anyone that gets really stuck you can renew your passport same day and it doesn't have to be done in person either.
I used an agency last year to do this and although it cost several hundred pounds to do, it was worth it as otherwise I would have needed to cancel a trip.
(5 trips over a couple of months with only a few weeks apart so risk was quiet high)
