Amex Plat Card

From the posts on here it seems that many members have the plat charge card. I have finally made my mind up to get one but just had two queries after reading through the various posts on here and flyer talk:

1) Current have amex travel prestige insurance via their stand alone polices. If I understand, for a missed flight / connection the prestige policy gives 1000 allowance and the plat card amex insurance only gives 150! Does anyone have any experience of this as 150 for a missed flight seems woefully inadequate and if I ever did miss a flight back to the uk from the states it would cost significantly more than the coverage

2) Are there any referral bonus schemes for new applications for the card, if there are please point me in the right direction

Glad you edited your post RedVee you had me most confused for a moment.

There are no referal schemes in place for UK Plat charge card.

The insurance cover you are taking about is the 150 for food/accommodation costs of you miss a connection and no alternative is offered within 4 hours.

Glad I wasn't the only one, thought I was going mad. Thats a major difference in insurance policies then between their stand alone polices and the card insurance. I must say its the only travel insurance policy i have come across that wont pay for you to get home in case of a missed connection or missed departure, provided you meet their criteria for the delay

It is low, but then you have to look at the cost of the standalone AmEx policy which is class leading vs. the annual fee for the card. It's not much better on Centurion where it is 200 cover, but I used that recently when Sarah and I missed an internal flight in South Africa due to a mechanical fault on our car whilst on the way to the airport.

If you've already completed the outbound sector, most airlines are accomodating if you miss a flight.

Scrap that, just logged in to my Plat account online, and see there is a 5000 MR points referral currently. The person doing the referring gets 5000 points when the new member signs up, and the new member gets 5000 points when the spend 500 within 3 months.

Which card is it exactly that gets you clubhouse entry? Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines or BMI are the airlines mentioned, nothing about Virgins am i looking at the wrong card?

The UK AmEx Plat card, gets you a Priority Pass membership, but non of the VS lounges are part of that programme. The Plat card does not offer any access to the VS lounges.

The AmEx Centurion card, which is by invitation only and with an annual fee of 1800 now, gives you VS Au status, and that will of course allow access to the CH.

The Plat card is a bit more of a luxury card and it really does depend on your travel and personal habits if the benefits warrant the 300 fee.

Am I right in thinking that the Plat Amex only gives 1 VS point per spent, whereas the Black VS Amex gives 2 per ?

That was always the factor that makes me keep the VS card.

Yes, that is correct Nick. You actually earn MR points that can be converted to VS miles amongst many others, at a 1:1 ratio.

I still use the VS black AmEx for all our daily spends, the Plat card is there for the benefits purely, which this year so far have saved me personally about 500 (200 when you take off the annual fee), plus then there is the travel insurance for four other families all linked on my account.
