Boston and ???

Currently in the process of organising a short break to Boston in June. Planning on spending 3 days in Boston (this will be my first visit) and then a couple of days relaxing by the coast.

Can anyone recommend an area or hotel to stay for the second part of my journey? I don't mind renting a car for these last days but don't want to travel too far. I've been looking at the VH brochure and featured destinations are Plymouth, Rockport, Cape Cod and Newport to name but a few.

Any suggestions welcome,

Why not try and head towards New York, fly back from JFK and experience a nicer journey home with a plane that has AVOD and maybe even an upstairs [:)]

It's currently scheduled to be a 747 Friday-Monday the dates I'm travelling.

Steve, if you give it a couple of days there are some Boson fans that will reply to you, they are away on a little VF social gathering right now, but they should be able to give you lots of info.

I love Cape Cod - near enough Boston but far enough away (if that makes sense).Lots of nice places to stay on the island. The Rockport area/Salem is worth a day trip (but no more IMHO).I've stayed in Plymouth too but it's not particularly exciting.

Newport is ridiculously busy in summer times, so much so that I would avoid it although trips to the 'summer cottages' are amazing!

It depends on what you want, I have friends who live in Naragansett Bay in RI, and it's lovely and quiet and old school America (where lobsters leap out of the creeks and into thermidor!), but probably best there to look at rentable places.

DragonLady and I often agree so much I think we're secretly married (!) - I too like Salem [:I]. I also like the area around Barnstaple on Cape Cod where there are many great inns for a few nights stay (and along the cape to West Chatham for great seaside walks).

Don't forget too that Boston has a good local train network, much underused if you want to stay in the city itself.

Couple more questions for you seasoned Boston travellers if you don't mind;

What's the best way to get to the hotel from the airport (staying at the Lenox)? I cannot decide whether to get a cab (approx $35) or take the 'T' ($2). I was wondering if the cab would be any quicker and easier as I should be leaving the airport around 6pm on the Friday evening or shall I just save my money and take the train?


I've got tickets for the Red Sox v Phillies on Sunday 12th[^] How long before kick off should I arrive and how long does the game last.

Used to love the T, but it's been a few years now as I usually travel north for work so always hire a car.

Games are usually 2 to three hours long depending on how good the pitchers are. If you're not a fan of the sport, hope for poor pitching and a long game, otherwise it'll feel like nothing happens. You'll find people drop in and out of games, some arrive a bit after start, many leave in the 9th inning if they think the game's a foregone conclusion. I'd recommend getting there half an hour early at least and take in Fenway, it's quite the place.
