Winter storm warnings

If your traveling to/from the East coast of the US over the next couple of days check with your respective airline.

Lot's of flights are being canceled.

Thanks for the heads -up, but the storm is actually mid-Atlantic (Washington, Baltimore, Philly), we're quite spared farther east. Newark and NY will have predicted small amounts of snow (4') and strong winds as the nor'easter blows through. Boston, flurries. IAD may have as much as 20'--which means no business as usual.
However, things change quickly in nor-easters so one never really knows til it goes. It's been a fairly slow snow year (though quite cold) thus far up here (unlike last year), and hopefully that will carry through til spring. Some strong sun and a torrential rain dissipated much of the snow cover we had. Yeah.

Yep - there has been warning on the BA website for the last couple of days now (nothing on Virgin I noted)

Oopps Virgin have now posted one (2 days after BA (nothing new in that is there[:w]))

Just seen the forcast on CNN - worst snow storm in over 90 years forcasted for East Coast of next two days then hitting our shores by Weds/Thurs. LOvely - just as I have planned & booked to go away on Friday grrrr

Grrrr my fault! Its because I'm due to visit mum and dad next weekend so of course there will be snow over here. Happened last month too so had to cancel that visit !

Better all be cleared by the time I get to NYC - you have until the 17th so get shovelling / snow plowing etc !

Well Philly Intl airport reported an official 28.5 inches of snow had fallen. I must admit I was a bit disappointed, I'm only about 30 miles north of the airport and I only got 12 inches! Perhaps I would be complaining more if I had to shovel my own driveway, but I woke this morning to find my path completely cleared by the HOA

PHL has reopened, about 5 hours ago, and I think it's pretty impressive they've cleared that much snow in 24 hours. Some airlines have cancelled some flights, but I think most are operating as normal. The forecast is calling for some more snow on Weds, but not saying how much. It probably won't be that bad so you should have no problems.

Ok I take it back...looks like the next snow storm, which is gonna hit tomorrow night (Tues) and last through to Weds night, might be almost as bad as the one a few days ago. Which is unprecedented. Here in Philadelphia this should take us over the prior record of 65.5 inches in a winter season. We're currently already at 56.3'.

It looks like this one could hit EWR worse than last weekends with possibly around a foot of snow falling on Weds, so there could well be delays/cancellations. If you are flying into EWR on Weds, then good luck. I'd also almost guarantee PHL will be closed on Wednesday, or at the very least a lot of badly delayed/cancelled flights. Roads should be fine and cleared by mid Thursday, as should public transport.

S**T! It happened to me two weeks ago and now guess what's forecast for Thursday evening just as I'd like to be on the VS46 going home, see here!

Looks Like I picked a good week for my trip then ! Had 5 glorious (but cold) days in NYC before it poured down yesterday (Tues)

I returned last night on the VS02 to a rainy London this morning

Continental have cancelled all flights today from Newark. Delta have cancelled 65 flights in New York area. United cancelled 70 flights yesterday due to the weather and are currently considering plans for today.

All three airlines issued travel waivers allowing passengers to re-schedule their plans for free, according to statements on their Web sites.

Am very concerned with this, Ms Carter meant to be flying to Newwark on BA185 then onto Boston over the weekend. Monitoring the BA185 for today and appears to be on time for 10:25 departure despite the pending weather front in the Northeast of the US

Well there are currently no airport delays in the New York area, it's raining, the VS45 is scheduled to depart on time but snow is forecast later. I'll cross my fingers.

The forecast snow didn't materialise in IAD yet.

My flight last night from AUS-IAD was about 2 hours late, which put paid to dinner with a friend - but having already known this about 6 hours before the flight, it meant that I went to Fogo de Chao in downtown AUS for a big old lunch, knowing that it may be the last real food I'd eat for a while.

The delay had been picked up elsewhere earlier in the day, before the inbound aircraft had started down from ORD, so not related to WX in IAD.

They were forecasting low vis (<2NM) for arrival in IAD, but this didn't materialise, instead a high overcast, but very clear below giving us a visual to 1R on arrival.

It's clear this morning, and the forecast for later is strong gusty winds from the NW. The big Stars and Strips in the middle of Saarinen Circle is already fluttering nicely.

This could possibly screw up RJ and prop ops, but not mess with the heavies too much. If they end up having everything land and takeoff on RY 30, then it will back up.

Fingers crossed UA922, with me on board, will get away back to London with no delay, as we've not much tailwind today, giving us a longish 7h+ block time.

Rolling update, now in NJ and it is snowing heavily. The morning forecast was for lighter snow but it's much worse. JFK is reported to be OK as it's more rain than snow, Newark is likely to be very bad.

My current concern is that I'll be able to get a car to JFK, if I do, then cross fingers!

ok, from those in the know, if Newark does get closed. Flights arriving there that are yet to take off from UK get cancelled, diverted, delayed till they are able to receive aircraft or is it a case by case scenario depending on the airlines involved??

It goes airline by airline until it's impossible. For example, two weeks ago CO cancelled most of its flight before the last snow storm whereas VS was holding on to the schedule until the last moment. Flights are still arriving and departing EWR though ...
