What is the free promotional gift? ;)

An all-expenses-weekend-break in Hull. You do have to sleep on a blow-up mattress in Neil's spare room, but then what do you want for nowt?

Certain Corporate contracts have a clause in them with a guarantee that they will not be downgraded, some also have a clause that they are guaranteed a (full fare J ) seat on any VS flight so if you get a flight with a lot of business flyers then this is where the downgrades happen. Perversely the people who book through their Travel Management Company have better protection than people who book direct on VS.com

So do some FC members above Gold.

It's actually a bit of a complicated one, if you except the offer made by the airline then I think you have surrendered your rights under the EU legislation, otherwise according to
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/smartapi/cgi/sga_doc?smartapi!celexplus!prod!DocNumber&lg=en&type_doc=Regulation&an_doc=2004&nu_doc=261

You are entitled to the following;

* 30% of the price of the ticket for all flights of 1500 kilometres or less;
* 50% of the price of the ticket for all intra-Community flights of more than 1500 kilometres, except flights between the Member States and the French overseas departments, and for all other flights between 1500 and 3500 kilometres;
* 75% of the price of the ticket for all other flights, including flights between the Member States and the French overseas departments.

This would seem to make sense to try to get someone on a different flight instead of having to pay them 75% of a J class ticket. Also AU are guaranteed a Y seat if full fare and booked 3 days before departure...

Thanks Sean, that does make it easier than trying to figure out the fare difference, for sure.

You'd be amazed at the number of people who don't show up for booked hotel rooms...

When I accepted the compensation with BA I checked that this was in addition to the ticket refund and indeed it was as the ticket was refunded later. The compensation was only for the immediate inconvenience.

Also I'm wondering in the EU blurb when they say 70% of the ticket is this 70% of the return ticket or 70% of what they calculate as the one way ticket. If you were downgraded in both directions would you therefore get 140% of the value of the ticket?
