Something I thought of to tell you - as you are flying on an Airbus, I thought I'd let you know that when the gear is lowered for landing, all the exit signs in the cabin illuminate. This is normal on Airbus aircraft and nothing to worry about - you do see some people with panicked looks on their faces when the signs come on.

I've never noticed that on the Airbuses!!

I've been a nervous flyer for a number of years now- I once made it all the way from London to Orlando without standing up- and all I can say is the more you fly, the better it gets.

My colleague was a very nervous flyer and work sent him to Sydney! He contacted special assistance and they were fantastic- all the flight crew came and spoke to him and explained things like turbulence to him and the cabin crew were great at keeping an eye on him too.

I am not the biggest lover of heavy turbulence, I think in part due to the fact that you do not know if you are going to experience it. However when I was younger and developed my worry of turbulence I did two things that made me feel a lot easier. First of all is to imagine that you are just on a bumpy road in a car or bus, if you can tell your brain that it makes it a lot easier and secondly is to take a glass of water in the car, its surprising how quickly it will spill over the edges as you go along the road, yet in turbulence in the air your water hardly ever spills. And remember the plane is designed to rattle a bit, its nothing to worry about.

You can also let staff know at check-in, I know sometimes special service requests can be totally missed at check-in. Don't be afraid of asking to maybe get on first or last, whichever may help. I hate flying, and going on my first long haul flight this year so I totally sympathise!!
