Firstly, what a fantastic job in the new site y) oo)
Maybe a future thought for a forum area;
Based on VS destinations, travel guide where people can gain info on locations/ accommodation, eating out etc. o.k. a bit like trip advisor, but leaning more to VS destinations and vflyer's extensive knowledge.
As it stands you end up single posting questions when they could be collated under a destination heading, enabling others to head there for info.
Overtime this could provide an extensive knowledge bank for those heading to places for the first time, and also opportunity to do reviews, and maybe lead to enticement to sponsors etc.. :?

Would this be possible under the Group structure?
We haven't started really using that yet but it would be possible to have an open group to discuss each particular destination.

I think so Bill, and I think that is exactly the sort of thing that Pete had in mind with the groups. With the forums now all being about simplicity, having lots of different threads/stickies for each destination would get complicated, and would result in a lot of posts still going in the wrong place and people getting confused about where to post, something we are trying to get away from.

Care to start us off with one then Mike y)

Although we had the Reviews section on the old site for hotels, restaurants etc., it was part of the forums as such and I don't think it was utilised much. The Group structure probably would support it better if there was a heading of say, "New York - Where to stay, what to do, where to eat"

On the old board people were more likely to ask for advice on destinations in the relevant Travel -General forum but as we know it was sometimes difficult to find old threads

I have to agree with what HL said, we had a destination guide of sorts before, people could submit reviews and ratings.

Frankly it was under used and people still posted asking for advice.

With that said, I really do think it would be better for people to just start a new thread, after using the search feature (which now works very well btw) so we can keep the info available on the site fresh and up to date.

It is the design of a destination Group that would need some planning.
Perhaps we need a framework that could be followed that was similar for all destinations
eg Threads for
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants
  • Things to do
  • The Airport
  • FAQs
The other consideration is that when starting a group, you take ownership of it - in some ways its moderator.
That could be a heavy commitment for somewhere like Florida!

It would be easier if someone showed the way with a particular destination ...... Scrooge....Vegas... :w

Exactly HL..

For example, I'm starting to try and gain as much info on Tokyo/Kyoto at present, and fear many generalised single posts asking specific questions.. Forearmed is forewarned and knowing what many of us are like for researching future trips, may create a catch-all for specific locations

I'd be happy to start one Neil, but where to post it? the concept may enable new posters to be replied to "see [link] on travel info about tokyo" etc

Well with Eddie Jordan telling us all that Yorkshire is not in England after thinking that Middlesbro. is in Yorkshire.

Maybe a Hull destination forum is needed.

Well, geographically and in terms of historical county boundaries,
Middlesbrough is in Yorkshire.

Historically even Hull should be in Northumbria

We'll let that go :w
