If you are having issues with registration, login or posting in the forum (ie, retaining your login session), these issues more often than not come down to cookies. If you've not cleared out your cookies since we switched to the new site, or your cookies have become corrupted, then you may experience problems with login. V-Flyer needs to use Cookies to remember you, so if it's picking up old or broken data, that's why you may see problems.

FYI, the forum and main site maintain two separate logins, but attempts to "bridge" together so you don't have to login twice. It is possible, however, to be logged into the forum but not the main site, and vice versa. Generally, going through the site homepage rather than deep-linking to a forum page will reduce that problem.

The internal site links tend to use the http://v-flyer.com URL, rather than www. - and because cookies see the two as different domains, you may find going to http://v-flyer.com less troublesome than www.

How to delete your cookies

In Firefox:
Go to Preferences -> Privacy and click the Show Cookies button

In the Cookies window, enter v-flyer.com in the search, then remove any that appear in the list.

In Safari:
Go to Preferences -> Security and click the Show Cookies button

In the Cookies sheet, enter v-flyer in the search box, then click Remove All

In IE 7 & 8 (versions prior to IE 7 not supported)
Under Tools -> Internet Options -> General, select the Delete button in the Browsing History section

IE General Tab

On the next window, make sure Cookies is selected and go ahead and delete.

You can also add v-flyer.com as a trusted site under Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy

Under the Sites button, add v-flyer.com and click Allow.

If all else fails - drop a line to a moderator. We're here to help as much as we can. And take comfort in knowing your problem can be solved, as many people using many different platforms and browsers can log onto V-Flyer every day - so we just need to figure out why your machine is misbehaving ;-)

In true troubleshooting style, I only started seeing this problem yesterday.

I also, only get it in Safari on the Mac, and Firefox on the PC and Mac, but not in Internet Explorer 7.

Some further research has prompted me to make a couple of config changes on the server. For these to come into effect, I'm going to need to flush one of the database tables tonight that maintains login sessions - this may mean you'll get that 'please login' message tomorrow, so apologies in advance, but I'm hoping this will help the few remaining people who are having trouble logging on.

All 'saved' sessions where cleared out tonight at approx 1.30am, so the site will be asking you to login again today; but hopefully this will be to the benefit of anyone who was having problems logging in (effectively, it's like clearing out the servers 'cookies').

Seems to be working a lot better today, thanks Pete. First time ever since the site launched I haven't had to log back in to the forums when coming back from the Community pages y)

Made a few updates, including getting the server to 'force' the http://v-flyer.com variant of the URL so there are fewer problems cause by two domains (www. is seen as a separate domain for cookies). Also cleared up a couple of places where the site was linking back to the www. variant, and that wouldn't have helped.

Fingers crossed the session clearout, URL rewrite and links updates will eliminate any further problems that people have been experiencing.

Quick question - is it me or am I missing something about the way posts are displayed in the forums? How are the topics listed - I thought (might be wrong) that they were/used to be listed in order of latest reply, howevever the listing order seems random?

This makes "how current/popular any topic is" hard to identify - can they not be listed by "most recently replied to"?

Cheers,

Viz.

PS how is the posting activity looking now compared to the activity levels pre the updated site?

The posts in the forums should be shown with the newest replied to topic first. This is the case if you view a complete forum or use say the 'view new or active posts' stream.

If this isn't the case with you, then have a check in your 'User Control Panel' (it is on the left hand side of the forum page), in board preference and then display options, you can change how the pages show for you. Your settings might be different which is what is affecting how your pages show.

I don't get a subject box when making a new post in the Itineraries forum...using Firefox 3.5.9 and have cleared cookies/cache.

Looks like I'm going to have to install Firefox to get to the bottom of that one (and the other reported FF problem of not seeing the availability window). Time was once when it was IE that did everything differently to everything else...

Ok - just checking; can you see this (screen shot from my Mac install of Firefox):

If so, that's what you should see. There's no subject line for itineraries, it builds one automatically based on the flight info.

If you're not see those fields, then I'll have to dust off my PC...

XPSP3 - none of that new-fangled rubbish for me ;)
