Just landed at LGW after a particularly pleasant flight down from LBA. Never been so pleased to be on a plane in all my life. Fingers still very firmly crossed for the morrow...

Hope everything goes to plan. If not, then I hope it was a very eventful flight down from LBA to LGW to enable you to write one of your legendary TR's!!!

MOL has announced that Ryanair won't be paying the compensation set out by the EU regulation to any pax affected by the cancellations and will go to court to fight it. They will only pay minimum refund required also.

What a w*****

Thomas Cook TCX952P registration G-JMCF (Boeing 757-28A) just made a u-turn to Manchester, it was out over the North Sea off Nofolk/Suffolk, it reported to London and Manchester Control it had an engine bleed problem after an 'intense smell of volcanic ash in the cabin during the climb between FL160 and FL200.

whether true or not, will have on the numbers wishing to fly at this time.

Any further update on this ?

Transcript
"For information we got the smell of the ash from about 16,000 feet in the climb, it stayed with us even when we were well above FL200. We had no smell at all on the way down and we're passing 14..."

ATC: "so between 160 to 200?"

"Difficult to say when it stopped in the climb because we still have the smell in here, and it took a while to clear. There are still traces of the smell but it was quite intense in the climb..."

(Later)

"Negative emergency, no special handling, everything is normal, its just that we have lost one of our engine bleeds, possibly through a contaminated valve."

Agreed but not surprised!

A member of the Commission for Aviation Regulation has just been on the news here to say that he is legally bound to pay the compensation and is telling people that if he refuses to do so they should escalate it by referring it to the Commission.

Well after a discussion with Mrs M we have decided to go to MIA and risk getting stuck there. Checked in on line and VS05 is scheduled to go at 11.15 in the morning. I'll drop you a line from the CH in the morning and let you know what's happening.

We missed out on OLCI (it was still non-operational when we left for LBA), but managed to avail ourselves of a fully functioning twilight check-in here at LGW. To my everlasting shame, we got SEQ nos 70, 71 & 72, but I suppose such things are to be expected in these uncertain times.

Getting squiffy on strong G&Ts in the Hilton exec lounge now...
