I had hoped when in Las Vegas at the end of the month to see Cirque du Soleil's "O" but, alas there are no performances on the Monday and Tuesday night I will be there. Which other Cirque du Soleil performance in LV do you recommend?

Any other shows to be recommended

If you're looking for a Cirque show, then Ka is the next best option to take at MGM Grand. We've seen both and loved them.

If you want a water based show, have a look at Le Reve at the Wynn, that was really good, but we still think the two Cirque shows we have seen have the edge.

Also, look on Travelzoo as they quite often have some discounts avaialable for these shows.

Thanks, Ptarmigan. I'd already seen that but I was wondering which show as I seem to remember one had less than favourable reviews on here some time back

Depends what kind of Cirque show you want to see....

Ka is more acrobat with a flimsy storyline

Love is more dancing than the high octane performances they are known for, altho still some pretty good stuff

Mystere is the typical acrobatic and skilled circus performances you would expect, but some acts you may have seen before

Zumanity is more risque and generally isnt the best received

The newest show is Elvis at the Aria, which havent seen yet but hope to rectify that in a few weeks.

Personally would see Ka of all of the above, excluding Elvis, however a lot of Vegas shows go dark ie no permforances on Mondays and Tuesday.

Enjoy

I saw Mystere there a few years ago, and was blown away by it. It has lovely touches of humour too, which wasn't like other Cirque acts I've seen.

Enjoy

The only one that has no performance on the Monday and Tuesday is "O". The others have a performance on one or the other

Thanks, everyone for the input. I'm still trying to decide

Love was without doubt our favorit and 'O' by far the worse thing we have ever seen, would have left at the interval if there had been one !

I am not saying your wrong (everyone has different tastes) but it really does amaze me how polarizing Cirque shows can be.

Hello!

Really useful thread, does anyone have any updated views/more recent recommendations for shows?

I'm off in a couple of weeks and definitely want to catch a show!

I was looking at the Criss Angel @ Luxor - anyone been to this one? It looks a bit different and the reviews I've found seem good.

Thanks,

Luke

Might be going off at a bit of a tangent, but I went to see 'Spider Man, Turn off the dark' on Broadway the other week.

It really is hysterically bad. I was shaking my head in disbelief at what I was seeing and hearing.

It starts off with a pretty strong opening image (very Julie Taymor - as good as the opening sequence of Lion King if you've seen it) - but then it goes downhill. Fast.

They've messed very badly with the story, they tell it in a rushed haphazard way, underscored by dreary and forgettable music.

Go see it if you can!

Of course, I should declare a conflict of interest as I mainly work for one of the major American theatrical groups who have a large presence in Vegas and the other major American cities - but I always want to see excellent theatre.

This was not it!

I had a chance when I was in NYC the other week but I decided not too on the basis there are shows that are so bad they are good but SMTOTD is, as you say, just bad.

Though it is doing phenominal business - some weeks at 95%+ of house sold.

And of course last week we saw another long extension of the preview period and a three week closure to allow for extra rehearsal and Julia Taymor has moved on to her other projects. And the week before there was a $12.5k fine for safety violations last year.

I keep wanting to call it 'Spider Man: turn off the Light'

Don't be so sure - I went on a Friday night and was comped, the people either side of me were also comped - and they are all ready putting tickets for Tuesday & Wednesday shows at the 1/2 price ticket booth in Times Square.

That is not a good sign.

Put aside the allegedly misreported $65 million start up costs (It's way over that, I'm led to believe) The weekly running costs will be huge. A cast of 30 plus, A band of 14, a huge crew, massive overtime bill due to all the rehearsals they're still doing? I believe they'll be lucky to cover their weekly costs let alone starting to re-coup.

Hi Luke

There are a couple of quite useful threads running on TA at the moment. One is "things I plan never to do again in Vegas" - Chriss Angel crops up quite often as does Man Blue, Sirens at TI and a couple of others. Quite a big thread, with more than a few sorry tales of excessive alcohol consumption ruining their breaks, but some good pointers.

There's another one called something like "things I definitely woud do again in Vegas" about which has some positive suggestions,

I have to say the Las Vegas forum is one of the busiest I've ever come across. There are at least 20 new reviews of my hotel since I last looked only a few days ago.

Always good to get it first hand from Scrooge though y)

Yep, though Elvis seems to be improving, but still not getting good reviews.

Great - as always, very comprehensive advice. I'll have a good read through the threads mentioned tonight.

Thanks R3dV!

We've seen all of the Cirque shows in Vegas except Mystere and Criss Angel, and would recommend (if O is dark) LOVE, KA, and Le Reve (although that's Dragone, not Cirque). All three are great. I would suggest staying clear of Zumanity unless you are looking for something saucy and risqué, and Elvis was very disappointing in my opinion. Enjoy! We are back in Vegas in 6 weeks and cannot wait! We are mulling over show options at the mo.........
