etiquette on board??

Hi all,

Is there any special etiquette that should be exercised while on board?? I used to clap upon landing safely, tried that landing Barbados in 2008 and the people around me just stared at me like i'd morphed into Fred Flintstone. ^)

Aside from being quiet, not spreading out and taking up space, or generally acting like a jackass, are there any rules??

To my mind, the fact that you appreciate that you are not the only person on board and thereby have consideration for others is the simple etiquette I try to follow

No rules just plain common courtesy. For example I wouldn't recline my seat during meal service and I ask the person behind if it is OK to recline before doing so. There's nothing worse than having the seat in front jerk into your face.

And definitely no clapping on landing!

I suppose clapping is OK if there has been some sort of on board 'event' such as dropping 20,000 feet (hope Lizz dosent read this!) or if there was some sort announcement about it being the captains first or last flight.

But the general courtesy of day to day life apply.

I'm with Tonty and Honeylamb on this one. Clapping should be reserved for something special or out of the ordinary. Landings are part and parcel of every pilots job, and while it might seem special to put several hundred tons of aircraft back on the ground, it's something they do day in and day out.

One time I do remember though was the UC section clapping the FSM at the end of her post landing annoucement. Just after the start of her annoucement one of the other stewardesses I believe f**ted, followed by lots of giggles from the rest of the cabin crew - alerting the UC section to look up and pay attention to teh FSM at the front. The FSM started turning red and grew progressively short of breath as she tried to control herself and continue as if nothing had happend (with the ither CC giggling away). Her pauses between sentances got progressively longer. She amazingly managed to finish the annoucement, with a round of applause from the UC section. Bet the rest of the plane wondered what was going on

Other things I'd add would be not spending eternity in the toilet freshening up, that's one of my pet peeves. That and bringing your own food onboard if it smells.

I was subject to point 6 on my first ever UC flight to IAD a few years ago but the crew were excellent and managed to wash my t-shirt and return it before we landed.... This is why I fly VS they nearly always go that extra mile...

There was a baby in Upper (now some people here will have issues with that but lets not go there!) and yet with all that space you still got hit!

yup when the mum was holding the baby up ( I say baby as the child was under a year old) and peering over my seat, dont have a problem with that its good to be nosey... but when baby decided to re colour my t-shirt! thats another matter....
and what annoyed me was the mum saying dont blame the baby when i actually was not all I wanted was another top to wear.
But hats off to the CSM in a flash I had a new top and told to pop into the loo and change it and to give her the soiled one, which I did. The CSM took my soiled top off me and said I would see the top at the end of the flight. I was thinking yeah get soiled t shirt into a bag and tie it up before it starts smelling. I was thinking most of the flight out was it worth saving the top or finding the nearest bin when i got off the plane. But Low and behold about a hour before we landed up trots the CSM with my now clean top and it was dry!

This happened on my first trip with VS and this action has earned my respect to all cabin crew and FSM's within VS they are a cut above the rest! they do go the extra mile!

I've had clapping a few times, once after an aborted landing at SFO, once for a FSM's last flight ... Never baby puke though (I'd be madder than you though!).

Others have posted etiquette comments, I agree with all.

I'll agree with everyone here - please don't clap on landing, it is quite cringeworthy at times.

One thing that is always appreciated by the crew that most people don't do is please take your headphones off when being asked something (ie. food/drink order).

Nevermind clapping I'd be the one sat there with my belt so tight it restricts breathing, lifejacket on, oxygen mask on and ready in the brace position until the thing touches back down onto solid ground! I'd then have stiff words with Mr captain until I had a bottle or 2 of wine!

No: 20 happened to me last business trip. Get to my seat, no room in the overhead for my carry-on. !

I find the nearest space in another overhead. 5 mins before take-off, an announcement was made for the owner of a carry-on fitting the description of my carry-on to make themselves known. I did the walk of shame and found out that I put the case in the Club Europe section and it was going to be offloaded.

I apologised and the CC tried to find a space for the carry-on in any overhead. Fully aware the 100 or so pairs of eyes on me. I said to put the carry-on in the hold but the CC said not to worry and it will be stored in the cockpit!

Never going to take on a carry-on again in the cabin.

I've only ever had clapping on a flight was twice (on the same flight), we were delayed 26 hours leaving Antigua with VS in December 2007. As we were turning for take off the pilot overshot the turning circle and half the plane ended up in the grass field.

They were unable to move the plane with us on and it turned out we needed a new wheel so we ended up overnighted and BA had to fly the wheel out.

Anyway the next night as we turned and took off people clapped. Then when we arrived at LGW people clapped.

The first and only time that the plane clapped on landing was when we flew Aer Lingus DUB - JFK. It was a beautiful, smooth landing, very little braking, we touched down and were literally straight at taxi speed. (probably one of the best if not the best one I've had)

Unless of course we glided in and I wasn't aware of the fact... It was a great flight all the way through.

Glad to see the article linked to earlier references using the seat in front as a prop to stand up or sit down, that is one of my most irritating peeves!

I totally agree - using the seat in front to stand up is so annoying, but it isn't only passengers who lean on them - I was in 46G (back of the front Y section on the LHR 747), and everytime the CC went into the cupboard behind me they leant on my seat - very annoying...

On our flight to LHR on Friday from BEG the captain announced that Serbia had just beaten Germany at football, which was greeted with loud approval from those on board
