Tesco's tariffs look attractive.
http://www.tescodirect.com/p/inc/specia ... ariffs.asp

32GB:
£479
£20 per month for a 12 month contract (250 mins, unlm. text + 1GB wifi)
Video voice messaging is not supported but that's not really something I care about.

They have these in stock but as of an hour ago the systems were down and they couldn't sign anyone up.

The queue outside the SF apple store was ridiculous - I couldn't see the end of it - apparently it went on for 3 blocks!

Very impressed with my iPhone 4 which was delivered this afternoon y)

The screen is stunning. Very clear, clean, sharp and crisp. Speed wise, it seems a bit snappier than the 3GS.

No screen of network issues here. If anything I'm now get a stronger mobile signal at home as I'm now getting 5 bars everywhere. Before it would drop to 2 or 3 in some places. Still a dead spot in the corner of my living room though!!

Three's iPhone tariffs look good too.

Called into my local Carphone Warehouse shop to buy a case and the staff said there that the queues where silly outside all the mobile phone shops today. People where queuing since before 6am.

Apparently some people waited upto 6 hours at Phones4u as they have to call the networks to do the activations and couldn't get though!!

O2 have a retail shop stock checker here. There's only 3 shops in North West England with any stock left at the moment!! Not sure about the other networks.

I wanted one and I've got one now.

Looks and feels great- much faster than my old 3G or so it seems. Also holding WIFI signal better in the house.

Screen is beautifully clear with really sharp text .

iPhone 4 in da house!

Just ordered my upgrade today, should be delivered Monday. I have already installed iOS 4 on my 3GS and like it so can't wait to get my hands on the new model! Pity they have not upped the memory to 64Gb but I guess that will be an upgrade option in six months or so - have to protect the revenue stream!

Well I was all for heading out to get one today. Sadly it was one of those manic horrid days and didn't manage to get out and now see that stock is very low so maybe I will hold out for a bit longer.

However I have seen one and my oh my it makes me 3G look like a relic of fifty years ago!!!!

I find this all very sad. I just do not get the hype. ii)

In 6 months there will be a new version out, but everyone to their own. Personally I just do not see the attraction of stroking a phone all day and night :w

Following previous patterns, it'll be 12 months, but I get your point.

Some people get obsessed with cars, some with football. Most people have a passion for something in their lives, and technology is a perfectly valid manifestation of that. Embrace the diversity of the world, Iain ;-).

I folded and done the upgrade on my 3GS.

Nothing mind blowing but multi-tasking works well and no problems with the upgrade.

Will wait for the 4s to come out.

I'm with you Iain !

I have a mobile and don't even know what most of the features are let alone how they work so this new onw would be totally lost on me.

when I bought it the chap in the shop was telling me about all the features on it and it could do x and y and z but looked shocked when I asked if I could make calls and send receive texts!

Fair play to those that are 'into' this sort of stuff if you enjoy it thats all that matters !

Exactly where and how did you get this?

I phoned O2 today to ask for my PAC code and spoke to a complete moron who just confirmed my decision to leave O2 as being correct. Too long a story to go into but he was full of poop.

How did you do this bazz when o2 are not taking online orders currently???!!!

So using o2 stock check I headed to my nearest store this morning. Arrived 20mins before they opened to wait in line. Upon arrival a smug manager announces "we have sold out as we decided to open at 8am".

So I went to apple and was one of the ten waiting for the last ones they had. After an hour and half of waiting They then announced they only had 32gb left but did have ten remianing. So I could have it if I went for the 32. Decided not to and hold out for the 16 which in reality and being sensible is all I need.

I guess it's back to the good old stock checker now to wait for more stock to arrive at o2.

If I buy online through apple am I right in thinking it will be sim free? So you can't purchase an o2 plan on apple.com?

I don't remember this much trouble for the iPhone 3G.

I asked bazz the same question as I can't see how it could be done with o2 either unless you have 'contacts'.

If you buy from Apple it's sim free and you can go to whoever you want (three look good for a sim only deal). I wish you had of taken the 32GB I would've bought it off you and covered your expenses. I popped along to my local o2 store on the day of release at about 9.30. joined the back of the queue and asked the staff how stock was when someone came down the line, I was fine if I wanted a 16GB but the 32GB was sold out :(! Would've been nice is they had of put a notice in the window to say the 32 had all gone.

If you have a nosey round the O2 forums, it seems some people are managing to get upgrades over the phone.

Gold Priority customers should have already been contacted by O2 to offer them an upgrade but it seems it's still worth a try and calling O2. Some people have managed it, others haven't.

I think it comes down to how much you spend a month with O2 (don't forget they also take broadband/homephone and mobile broadband into account if you also get these from O2)

That all sounds fair enough.

I did try this yesterday and spoke to the most arrogant and clueless o2 employee I've ever encountered. I've got by PAC code now anyway and I'm leaving them after that experience.

My spend isn't great anymore as I was just on the £20 simplicity tariff and get one of my broadband lines from them. I started off at £45 per mont and dropped to £35 so not a Gold customer by any means.

I was with o2 on a monthly contract on my 3Gs and did the whole thing over the phone. Took the early upgrade option, was told the phone would be delivered next Monday but it arrived on Friday. No hassle what so ever and I don't have contacts at o2.

Edit to add, I was on £35 per month but downgraded to £25 per month, I have no other products or services from them and was not a gold privvy, my usage is very low, so no special treatment other than being an existing customer.

I thought I would post my two penneth as I am soooooo p*ssed with O2 and Apple at the moment I want to tell everyone HOW TO AVOID BEING RIPPED OFF!.

OK, Firstly I bought the iphone4 at FULL cost from Apple. £600 for the 32gb SIM Free. Don't get too concerned just yet! I then traded in my old Iphone 3G 16gb with Mazuma Mobile - £180 cash or £200 in Argos vouchers.

I then phoned o2 and asked to be transferred to PAYG, but told them I was ditching my iphone so I just wanted PAYG Text and Web. £10 a month gets you 'unlimited' internet (Yeah right!), 300 texts and the £10 of call credit (about 300 mins). Sim arrives and I hack it with a pair of scissors. (Google it, but I can confirm it does work!). Put the sim in and booted up and activated the phone. Added the £10 credit - NO INTERNET service. Not a problem though... read on.

OK so you need to change your APN settings - This is in 'Settings' 'General''Network' 'Cellular Data Network' - Change all APN names to payandgo.o2.co.uk - Leave the username and password as they are. Once you have done this you need to reboot the phone - Hey presto - FREE 'unlimited' internet on an iphone with 300 texts and roughly 300 mins for £10 a month!

Don't put up with o2 ripping you off. Even on the iphone simplicity plan you £15 a month - How do they justify the extra £5 for the same plan! It is an 'ism' of some kind I am sure it it - Maybe it's appleism!

Anyway, By following this you end up with a 32gb IPHONE 4 for £400 (assuming you have an old iphone to trade in) that's £100 more than a £35 a month contract phone. But work out what you have paid after the compulsory 18 month contract:

18 x 35 = 630 plus the purchase price of the phone (£290) = £920

compare to PAYG
18 x 10 = 180 plus the (trade in) purchase price (£400) = £580

So PAYG is £340 cheaper than contract.

So one passing thought - Where does your subsidy for 18 month contract go????

All the best guys!

Oh also, PLEASE take my advice and DON'T upgrade your iPod Touch or iPhone 3g (not sure about 3GS) to IOS4 - It is seriously broken. Stopped my ipod working in my car and made my iphone grind to a halt.

Thanks for the info, a couple of flaws in your calculations:

18 x 35 = 630 plus the purchase price of the phone (£290) = £920
You can still trade in your own phone so you need to take £200 off this figure too as you've done for your other figure. The price of the phone on that £35 pm contract is £279. So the total is £709. You can get that down to £699 if you take the phone for £179, go on the £45 contract and downgrade it to the £35 plan after 9 months (which is allowed). So a saving of £119 your way rather than £340. You're right though, your way is still cheaper and it's how a few are going about it.

On the other hand, the plan from Tesco is very attractive too. 250 mins, unlmd. txt, 12 months @ £20 and the phone for £429, less your £200 trade in. Then go onto the contract/PAYG you mention @ £10 per month for 6 months and you get a total of £529 for 18 months (after the £200 in vouchers trade in) ;)

I'm sure there's many ways of getting a better price with various suppliers.

Thanks Bazz, how many months did you have to buy out?

I'm guessing that's why I wasn't offered it as my old 18 month contract was up in April and I've been on simplicity since so they couldn't eek another £20/mth out of me before tying me up again etc.

I'm just glad I've stayed on the Simplicity 20 for iPhone 30 day plan O2 retentions offered me when I came out of contract in Jan.

I pay £19.99 a month for 600 mins and 1200 texts + unlimited data (for now anyway)

I also went down the SIM free iPhone 4 handset purchase route. I've also ordered a free Three PAYG micro-SIM from their website.

O2's tariffs are now quite frankly crap. They have halved the minutes and given you unlimited texts now on all pay 18+24 month contracts. If you now want the same number of minutes you had with the original O2 tariffs, you now have to pay £5 a month more :(!

To me O2 seem to be shooting themselves in the foot here somewhat as well. Many many iPhone 3G users came out of contract in Jan this year and O2 retentions offered the 30 day SIM only plan or you could stay on your existing tariff on a month by month basis. Now it's new iPhone time they really don't seem to be doing anything to get these customers back into an 18 or 24 month contract. There's no incentive to sign another contract with O2. Surely that's not a good business model?

I'm also on a monthly plan with my ISP (Plus Net) who regularly try and throw discounts at me to try to get me onto a longer term contract, which I wont do.

I've spoken to O2 customer relations about their new tariffs (along with their poor 3G coverage) and it's another case of 'due to extensive customer feedback....blar blar blar'
