Just to interject here, while I am slightly envious of the UK phones, the tariff system that is now in place leaves me left with a slight warm fuzzy feeling for the simplicity of AT&T....and even more so for Sprint.

I had to buy out quite a lot but got a very good price privately for my 3Gs which was way more than I paid for it so, overall happy with the deal.

Have just had a play with the iPhone 4 in the Apple Store and I have to say that I prefer my 3GS.

I too have an iphone 3Gs, and have updated the OS to 4, so would be interested to know what it is about the iphone4 that you're not keen on in comparison to the 3GS?

Apple clearly haven't sorted the 'data roaming when it's not supposed to' issue with either iOS4 or the iPhone 4.

Once again, even though I had data roaming turned off, my iPhone 4 has managed to collect data whilst I was in Paris :(!

How difficult is it to sort this problem ?| ?|

Should have gone for Android!!! As well as turning off data, we can stop the apps from automatically updating which could be your problem, I guess. Do you have such an option available to you? :?

that's really weird. I've been abroad a fair bit with my iphone, always turn data roaming off and it hasn't collected any data.

What is it collecting? email? You may need to check your 'push' settings in mail and turn that all off or to 'manual' too? There's another menu hidden under 'mail' and 'advanced' which you can turn off the schedule which maybe causing it?

Do you also turn off 3G when abroad?

So still no iPhone 4 with me. Was rather annoyed with the o2 stock check thing as it clearly said stores had iPhones when the store themselves had sold out days before. So either the stock check is not very good or store managers are hoarding them!!!!

Seems now all o2 stores in the south are out of stock so I guess its a waiting game.

I have upgraded my 3G to iOS 4 and boy o boy it is slow and laggy. Would echo comments saying to avoid the update, it takes me a good twenty seconds to get ant ext message conversation up on my screen when selected.

So now begins my iPhone 4 hunt- help would be welcomened!!!!

Having already upgraded to iOS4 on my 3GS, I have no problem with that - it works fine without any problems and it hasn't slowed the phone down at all. Also from another comment here, with the amount of overseas travel I do, I have never had my iPhone downloading data when the "Data Roaming" is switched off - well I've never actually turned "Data Roaming" on once!

I don't like the design of the iPhone4 - I much prefer the look of the 3G and 3GS. When my contract is up, I'm going to keep my 3GS and just switch to a much cheaper contract.

Sell you mine for a price :D LOL, only joking. Already been offered £700 for my 32GB iPhone 4 from a friend.

Another friend made himself £200 by selling his place in an O2 shop queue on launch day too.

Seriously though, Apple shops are probably going to be your best bet at the moment. Surprised Apple haven't also offered online stock checking. I'm sure they did when the 3G launched :?

Pretty much the same experience here, the only thing is it does seem to be draining my battery a bit quicker.

I've decided to stick with my 3GS, see what Apple release next year, as I think after 2 years the battery wont be up to much.

Love the new iPhone 4. The camera is great and a Facetime conversation to family in the US worked very, very well (better than iChat even!).

Never had this problem myself, as Rich asks, do you have your mail set up correctly when abroad too?

I'd already disabled push (I have a POP email account, MobileMe and an Exchange account set up on my iPhone) but how your mail is set up is actually irrelevant really as having data roaming turned off should mean just that.

That should block all data transfer when roaming via the cellular network end of story and ever since iOS 3 this has not been the case.

I've spoken to O2 who have escalated this to technical now.

I'm only talking a few quid here anyway so it's nothing drastic, just something to be aware off.

Most (if not all) O2 and probably most other network mobile accounts should now have the new £40 max data roaming limit on them now anyway.

Just a quick heads up for people.

Was in apple yesterday and told that the smaller uk stores are getting around 600phones a day. Apple are running a waiting list however most stores have temporally closed this as it's too long.

By comparison only larger o2 stores are getting stock and it is around 50 phones a time with deliveries being very sporadic.

iPhone 4 signal fault leaves Apple 'stunned'

And how much is this piece of kit costing you guys and gals?

Clearly a triumph of hype over substance...rather like the England football team!!

Now where is the smirking smilie? ):

It is definitely to do with how well the handset is connected to the mast/cell.

No matter how hard I try or how I hold it or where I put it, I cannot get my iPhone 4 to drop a single bar with an O2 micro-SIM in it (that's with and without a cover on it)

Put a Three micro-SIM in and I can easily reproduce this problem. After a few seconds of just lightly touching the handset at the bottom left hand corner, I go from 5 bars 3G to No Service without a cover on. Having a cover on it does improve things.

The Three (3G) mast here is further away than the shared 2G mast O2 use.

Thanks james - this most probably answers why the issue was not identified prior to release :w

Fat chance then of my being able to get a signal, with any provider ): Best I stay away then :(
