In short, no it is not right. ESTA is still "free". There are sites out there that will charge you £25 for effectively filling the form in for you. Link here to the US government website answer to the question.

I believe the US government has plans to start charging at some time in the future though when and the amount has not yet been set (ISTBC on this bit).

There is a law passed by the US Congress to charge for an ESTA but this has not been implemented yet.

I always refer people to use the ESTA link on the US Embassy site. http://london.usembassy.gov/

There is NO need to use an outside agency - you only end up giving them the same info as you yourself would enter into the official form PLUS £25 !.

They don't (in fact CAN'T) offer a speedier service that doing it yourself.

When the charge is implemented it is expected to be $10.

I got a new passport last week and did my ESTA application at the week end and it is still free.

Interestingly, on my recent trip to Chicago - I only needed to fill in the Customs card, and not the other form. Was this a one off for my flight (not on virgin metal), or is the ESTA now the only item required.

Only need the customs form now if you have completed the ESTA online.
