I have qualified for a free Upper Class limo pick up at Gatwick. Are they really limos or just another ordinary taxi ? Do I need to confirm my eta before my flight ? Thank you.

Limo is the wrong word. To be precise, they're Chauffeur Driven Cars (CDC's)

In my experience they're usually large Volvo Saloons - although I believe you can request an estate if you've got a lot of luggage

I'm not sure what you mean by qualified?

I assume you have booked an UC fare which includes the CDC, if so, you need to ring and make the actual booking, giving them your details, it won't just automatically turn up. Call the UC reservations number and follow the prompt for the CDC.

In London there are loads of advertising boards cropping up calling them "Limos" so I know where the OP is coming from.

I have yet to have a volvo - a motorbike once (never again !) and Merc S series the rest of the time. In the US thay are usually chealsea tractors of some sort.

If you are arriving at LGW (or LHR for that matter) then you dont need to pre-book anything. There is a Limo desk after you depart customs (forward and to your left) and your name will be on their list. Just tell them where you want to go (i.e. home or office as I decide that when I land) and they will allocate a driver for you.

However when you are going to the airport from home then yes you must pre-book as they wont know where to collect you from !

This was the first time I have ever posted anything on the internet so I am not sure of the protocol. But thank you for the helpful replies about the limo transfer.

Welcome to V-Flyer and thank you for your first post.

Please do not worry about protocols. So long as you don't use text speak and observe common good manners all will be well.

In order to be able to help you those replying were seeking some kind of clarification when you said you had qualified for a UC limo pickup. Not every Upper Class ticket qualifies for a CDC/limo so they wished to be sure you were entitled to it and would not be embarrassed by looking for something to which you were not entitled.

It is my understanding from your post that you are asking for advice from when you arrive in Gatwick, in which case hackney guy's information is spot on.

Enjoy your flight in UC and your trip in the CDC

for my trip last week the UK cars were Volvo V70s & in the US they were lincoln town cars which do look more like limos. the Uk cars don't carry any taxi-type signs, they're completely unmarked & the drivers will normally be suited.

gets the neighbour's curtains twitching every time i get picked up or retured :D

on the arrival times, they'll ask you where you want picking up & will give you a suggested pick up time from some system they use (probably google maps!). you can ask for an earlier time if (like me) you prefer to have a good margin for delays built in. you can also leave booking until pretty much the day before if you're not sure where you're going to be.

also, something that gets overlooked is that you can be transferred to any regional airport if you're flying into heathrow or gatwick from within the UK, regardless of who that flight is booked with; i was flying to/from heathrow via manchester with BA this week & had the cars take to from home to manchester & back
