We're booked on a cruise from Barbados to Southampton so need a one way ticket out.

We have enough miles to upgrade from Economy to UC and the upgrade seats are there, but I know one way fares are very expensive, so is there any way of avoiding the vast cost of a one way ticket?

Do you not have enough miles for a one way UC ticket, 50k miles? You can buy one way rewards with miles no problems. If you don't, then you could either buy some miles, which would probably still be cheaper than a Y class one way fare.

I've just checked and yes, I have enough for a one way reward seat and if we buy a few 1,000s for my husband, we can both travel UC for around £700 - bargain!

Thanks for the help.

Congrats! Though paying £700 for what should be a free ticket really isn't a bargain (why are they allowed to charge fuel surcharge?!). But that's for another thread ...

The £700 for 2 UC seats is much better than the £499 PER PERSON for the BA WT+ seats the cruiseline quoted.

I'm happy.

i am guessing the 700 quid includes the mile purchase as taxes are £222 per perosn.

Incidentally if you book a one way from the US the taxes are only juts over 100 pounds !!!!
