probably a dumb question, but... if you buy an upgradeable EC or PE ticket, and spend the miles to upgrade to PE or UC, do you still get the miles for the original class you paid for? or none at all?

Obviously full reward flights give you no miles, but I wondered if paying $1700 for a PE fare gave you at least those PE miles, which partly offsets the 65,000 miles you have to spend to get into UC.

You earn Miles and TP based on the ticket you paid for rather than where you actually end up sitting on the plane.
But - Miles and Money gives you neither mileage or TP so is pretty much a waste of you miles as the saving is not significant.

That's very subjective.

Some family flew VS to MCO in 2008 for the first time, earned miles and they are going back in 2011. They have just booked a MPM (Y out and W back) with the miles earned in 2008 at a saving of nearly £180 each, so for 5 of them a saving of £900. They will very unlikely fly long haul again in the near future, so it's perfect them.

Yes, for a regular traveller, with eyes on a bigger/better use of the miles, the saving might not make sense, but it is all dependant on each situation.

Neil, just tried to post the same but it seems to have dissappeared. ?|

Anyho try again - we had friends that saved over £1000 booking 4 MPM economy fares to MCO that was even after buying the miles required.

Always worth checking MPM fares if you don't need the tier points or miles

That might be because you started your reply before I posted my reply, but hit the 'post reply' button after I had posted. The system then lets you know that someone else has posted and asks if you want to post your reply still, although it isn't that clear if you aren't aware of it and it has meant some of my replies didn't get posted, so I had to type them out again.
