Arrived at a very quiet T3 at 0700 for the VS19 on Friday 13th. Check In at UC desk was quick and efficient, smiles from the girls, stony faces from the guys (not sure why). Upon issuing of boarding pass, our check in assistant looked quizzically at the boarding pass with a 3pm departure time... oh dear I thought but assurances from her that flight was scheduled to depart on time...

Through the UC private security channel and some very disgruntled BAA staff clearly discussing the UNITE decision to strike, more interested in that than checking our bags so straight through and on to the calm and oasis of the UC Lounge - greeted with a very smily and chatty lady who checked us in and then the bad news came... VS19 delayed till 2pm... but hey at least we had the lounge.

Concierge staff and team seemed very unsure as to why there was a delay, so thanks to all that answered my post on the day to get to the truth. A hearty breakfast and bucks fizz in the restaurant, and then a free treatment in the spa; followed by a wander around T3 shopping. Seemed to be a day of delays for VS and Iberia, and felt thankful for the UC lounge to which I returned for a few more (hic!) beverages with my partner.

At noon, flight pushed back to a 3pm departure so time for some lunch, and shock horror, no Virgin Burger?!?!?! I opted for the Crispy Duck which was delicious and Chicken Lasagne was had by my partner in cream - which was superb (why are the portions SO small?).

Text from my ever helpful father to say I should contact VS to enquire about compensation, which I did, and told to email VS directly... which I did in the lounge.

Finally at 1445, UC pax were called for boarding, and greeted by a fantastic cabin crew headed by an really jolly Irish male CSD, and *** in the Upper Cabin (also CSD) who was fantastic. The female UC cabin crew were very attentive, and also apologetic for the delay, champagne flowed (two glasses for pax before take off), but the male crew in UC were both very stuck up and clearly not interested in giving the Virgin service. Luckily I was being looked after by *** throughout the flight, and she was a delight. Captain came over the PA to apologise for the delay, which was due to "over-running maintenance" of the plane.... hmmmm wonder if that's a get out for any compensation??

Flight finally pushed back at 1545 and by 1700 we were in the air and on our way to SFO.

In flight service was great, *** kept the drinks topped up, and had a great chat with us, really wanted to hear all about our holidays and talked alot about V-Flyer and the members she had met. Lunch was the bloody mary soup (with vodka) and it really worked hot!! Next on was the lamb, again absolutely delicious, though cannot remember pudding, cheese however was great. Settled back to watch a couple of films, and then a quick disco nap, before the final 2 hours of the flight and afternoon tea.

Landed at SFO just after 1915 local, and straight through immigration as no queue whatsoever. Bags were first off and into Union Square hotel by 2030.

Fantastic flight, great female crew, only let down were the guys - gents really no need to be so mardy and sour puss looking really did not suit you (and you know who you are as your CSD had a go at you both!!)

Glad the flight was good once you finally got moving - just be glad you had the clubhouse to relax in!

Over running maintenance should not be used as an 'extraordinary circumstance' an so should affect any compensation - your flight was clearly delayed by more than 4 hours. The wikipedia article on Regulation 261/2004 is actually quite informative.

Thanks for the TR. At least you had the CH to while away the delay. I've done an additional few hours in the main terminal whilst waiting for a delayed flight to LAX before, and it certainly doesn't add to the experience.

Did one of them bear a passing resemblence to Chris Moyles, by any chance?

Thanks for the trip report and REALLY glad to hear that SB continues to delight. One of the things I dislike about flying BA more these days is that it means I don't even get the slightest chance of flying with SB or TB.

Nice to see you back SB!

SB thank you for looking after us so well... I have already sent an email to Virgin complimenting your great hospitality. SB sadly neither of us can remember the names of the two stewards in UC (mainly because they completely blanked us all the time!!). SB you are a legend and we really hope to see you again.
