Hi all,
Sorry for the rather dull post.
I am booking a trip to NYC and am having difficulty deciding which return flight to take.

Not having flown to/from NYC for a good 15 years or so, I am not sure what the current favourite is between Newark and JFK.
I can either fly from Newark on the morning or late evening flight, or JFK from later afternoon or late evening.

Which will have the least probability of being delayed?
Which is better when taking checkin and security into account?

I'll be in PremEcon, so lounge is not an issue.

Between the flights there'll be no difference in terms of delays, airport experience, seat etc. if you choose either of the Newark flights.

The VS018 will be a A343 however and likely have the older IFE.

JFK flights are prone to longer delays, take longer to get through security, but is generally a better airport terminal to spend time in.

The choice I suggest should come down to your personal preference for night time, or day time flying. I love the day time flight, when I have the time, you get home, have a drink, go to bed, wake up as normal!

It depends on what you trip is for. If it is leisure than for me the daytime EWR flight is a waste of a day in NYC, but understand it works for some.

I personally prefer the last flight out of JFK, I can sleep pretty much straight away and wake up at a roughly more normal time when back in the UK, with the earlier evening flights, I can't sleep because I'm not tired and then when I do drop off, it's time to wake up.

my preference too is for the late flights back - it gives you virtually the whole day in NYC.

The AM flight from EWR might, as Neil said, work for some but given the time you need to get to the airport by, travel time there and getting up to do last minute packing / shower you have essentially wasted a night in a hotel.

The OP has stated that they are flying in PE for this trip.

Ah - sorry - didn't get to the end of the OP!

The early morning flight from EWR is the least likely to be delayed as it has overnighted there and traffic is much lighter at that time of the day so no delays in getting airborne.

While I can accept what people say about taking that flight means the loss of a day in NYC, I took it and really enjoyed it. I have difficulty in sleeping on flights from the east coast because of the shortness of the flight. On this occasion there was no need to sleep and when I got home, I was in bed at my usual time. No jet lag! y)

Thanks all...
Another quick question. This wasn't an issue before as I only had the choice to JFK for my inbound, but as I found out I can go a day earlier I also have the choice of EWR for the inbound.

Which one is best timewise between landing and getting your bags?

Go for EWR as the immigration hall wont resemble an international at Wembley.
If your unlucky at JFK you will land 5 minutes behind every other airline the world can offer, and therefore an hour in line isnt unusual.

cheers

But I always try to get the 10.30 (VS03) to JFK - it lands around 1.30 and every time the immigration hall is empty and you're through before your bags.

Also take into account your eventual destination once you land.

A longer wait at JFK for immigration / baggage etc could mean a shorter / cheaper journey to your hotel etc and actually save you time and money.

Rich - I agree, the VS003 is the only JFK flight I will take because of the immigration nightmare. But, then you have a long, long day ...

I agree, but again if you are going for a short leisure break, taking the early flight out of LHR and then the last flight back out of JFK maximises your time in NYC.

I guess what suits one might not suit another and it all comes down to personal preference and choice.

On the outbound I definitely recommend the VS3 - maximises time in NYC and no queue at immigration. I think the overnight flights home are much of a muchness.

On the other hand, I prefer the VS2 when working, some time before the flight leaves and in the clubhouse to work, arrive in the evening, drink, bed ...
